WPI Halts Win Streak For Women’s Soccer

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team had its six-game win streak snapped Sunday afternoon by Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Engineers picked up a 2-0 non-conference victory over RWU on a rainy and windy Sunday afternoon.

WPI wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, posting the first score of the game in the third minute. Lizzie Rooney (Harvard, Mass.) found Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.) on the left side of the box. Bracken fired a shot just inside the left corner past the keeper and putting the Engineers on top 1-0.

In the 18th minute, RWU's Kristen Casey (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) sent a long pass to Jordyn Labriola (Hopkinton, Mass.) who was able to draw the WPI keeper Gabi Hoops (Stonington, Conn.) out of the box. Labriola was able to get a decent shot off, but had it kicked away by Engineer defender Kara Martin (Scituate, Mass.).

RWU had another chance in the 22nd minute to tie the game. Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) served up a corner kick to Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.). Woznicki kicked the ball from waist high towards the right corner, but was turned away on a great save by Hoops.

With just under two minutes to play, WPI almost added another goal by the end of the half. Lynn Renner (Aberdeen, S.D.) sent a long pass to Jaime Espinola (Greensboro, N.C.) who had a clear look at a shot. Unfortunately for WPI, Espinola's shot sailed wide right keeping the Engineer lead at one.

In the second half, WPI doubled its lead in the 54th minute. Emma Turton (Poland, Maine) took a pass on the right side of the penalty box and fired a shot on net. Her first attempt was denied by Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) but got a fortuitous bounce right back to her. She would convert on the second shot, putting WPI up by two.

The Hawks came close to pulling within one with 17 minutes to play. Labriola extended a long pass ahead of Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) for her to catch up to. However Hoops was able to get to the ball first and slide to secure it, making sure Broderick couldn't get a shot off. From there, the Engineers continued to bleed out the rest of the clock, keeping the Hawks' offensive chances at a minimum. WPI would hold on for the two-goal win.

Hoops made six saves for WPI in the shutout, while O'Donovan also tallied six stops for RWU.

Roger Williams (6-6-2) will have the rest of the week off and won't compete again until Saturday at 1pm against Eastern Nazarene College. WPI (10-2-1) also has the rest of the week off, stepping back into NEWMAC action on Sunday at Wellesley at 11am.
