After a great conference win the night before, the Roger Williams University Men's Ice Hockey team prepared to face in state rival Providence College, who was ranked #8 in the northeast. With the Hawks being ranked #11, they came out ready to play and looked like a team that wanted to be in the top 10.
The Hawks were testing Providence's goalie, Lavalley constantly in the first but could not find a way to score. Then late in the period, after a great cycle play behind the net by
Joseph Bina,
Jeremy Lawton walked to the front of the net and was able to find a way to get the bouncing puck into the net to put the Hawks up 1-0. With just under two minutes left to play in the first Providence took a penalty for tripping. After not capitalizing on their first powerplay chance,
Jeffrey Demers buried a one-timer, on a cross ice pass from
Joseph Paolillo, with just 47 second left in the first. 41 seconds later
Joseph Bina found the back of the net to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
After a strong first period, the Hawks came out a bit slower in the second.
Ryan Shea was forced to make 15 saves as there was no scoring in the second period. The Hawks still controlled a 3-0 heading into the third, put Providence looked to cut the deficit. Providence controlled play the first half of the third period. Providence was able to cut the Hawks lead to 3-2, with 9:10 left to play. Providence's second goal looked as though if it light a fire under the Hawks, who responded with strong team defensive effort for the last 9 minutes to prevent the Friars from tying the game.
Ryan Shea made 38 saves to improve to 3-0-0 with a .941 save percentage.
