Men’s Lacrosse stuns Eastern Conn. St. in OT

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team clinched a thrilling 12-11 overtime win over Eastern Connecticut State University Wednesday evening.

After giving up the go-ahead goal with 30 seconds left, the Hawks scored with three seconds left to send the game to overtime and eventually come away with the win.

It was a back-and-forth affair for most of the day, with the score tied at the end of the first and second periods. Dan Vasquez (Newington, Conn.) scored first for the Warriors two minutes into the game before Nick Gagnon (Milton, Mass.) tied it up four minutes later. Those two goals would be the only scoring in the period.

Will Siefert (Duxbury, Mass.) gave RWU a 3-1 lead with a pair of goals in the second quarter. Yet the Warriors' Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn.) scored twice before the end of the period to make a 3-3 game headed into halftime.

The third period saw Tim Reilly (Hanover, Mass.) begin the half with a pair of goals for the Warriors. Both teams would then trade goals over the remainder of the period, leading to a 9-7 Eastern Connecticut State lead going into the final period.

The fourth quarter saw the Hawks erase a three-goal deficit to tie the game in the final minute. Gagnon scored with 54 seconds left to make it a 10-10 game. Eastern Connecticut State appeared headed toward victory after Shawn Tierney (Norwell, Mass.) put the Warrior up by one with 14 seconds left.

However, RWU won the ensuing faceoff, leading to Eric Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) finding Gagnon for the game-tying score with three seconds left. After forcing overtime, the Hawks won the faceoff and moved the ball around for a minute before Max Cammarota (Redding, Conn.) connected with Justin MacIntyre (Norwalk, Conn.) for the game-winner.

Gagnon finished with nine points on six goals and three assists, while Cammarota added three assists and Siefert three points (2 G, 1 A). Connor Carroll (Madison, Conn.) made eight saves for RWU in the win.

Reilly (3 G, 2 A) and Rougeot (4 G, 1 A) each finished with five points. Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, Mass.) made 15 saves for the Warriors in the loss.

On Saturday, Roger Williams (2-3) hosts Wheaton College while ECSU (1-3) welcomes Farmingdale State.
