The hawks split home opener with USCGA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bristol, RI- The Roger Williams University softball team split their double header, home opener, with Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, March 16th.

In the first game of their double header, the Hawks lost a hotly contested 5-2 game in seven innings on Wednesday after surrending the lead in the seventh inning.

For the bears Sarah Sorenson got it done in the circle on the way to a win. She allowed one run over seven innings. Sorenson struck out three, walked none and gave up 11 hits. Meg Maliga was charged with the loss. She lasted just seven innings, walked none, struck out seven, and allowed five runs.

USCGA jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Emily Hogan kicked things off for USCGA with a single. A double by Emma Hvozdovich then moved Hogan from first to third.

The Hawks answered USCGA's top inning with one run of its own in the fourth. The Hawks scored on an RBI single by Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, RI). USCGA didn't relinquish the lead after scoring three runs in the seventh inning when it scored on An RBI double by Cherokee Strickland and an RBI single by Hannah Ingerson.

The Hawks beat USCGA in the second game of their double header 7-0 in seven innings.

The Hawks scored three runs in the fourth inning. The Hawks scored in the fourth on an RBI single by Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, RI) and a two-run double by Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, NJ).
It was a good day at the plate for the Hawks' Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, RI). Ledbetter went 2-4, drove in one and scored two runs.

Juliet Hulme (Duxbury, MA) kept USCGA off the scoreboard for all seven innings she was on the rubber. She pitched a shutout, allowing no opposing players to cross the plate on six hits while ringing up four.
Sarah Sorenson was the game's losing pitcher. She lasted just 1 2/3 innings, walked none, struck out none, and allowed three runs.

The Hawks never surrendered the lead after the second inning, scoring three runs on an RBI double by Merri Moise and a two-run triple by Taylor Messier.

The Hawks take the field again on Saturday, March 19th at Rhode Island College at 12:00PM in Providence, RI and are home again on Sunday, March 20th against Johnson and Wales University at 1:00PM
