Box Score WENHAM, Mass. — A 10-goal second half powered the Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team to a 14-6 victory over Gordon at the Brigham Athletic Complex on Tuesday evening. The two teams played to a draw after one half, but the Hawks erupted in the fourth quarter, leading to a slanted triumph in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.
Gordon's calm and collected approach on offense in the first quarter led to two quick goals right away. Nico Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.) finished off a pass from Jake Martin (Watertown, Mass.) before Martin scored an unassisted goal just 45 seconds later to put the Scots up 2-0.
Roger Williams was quick to answer with a minute gap between scores as Justin Macintyre (Norwalk, Conn.) halved Gordon's lead.
No one scored again until the third minute of the second quarter when Martin again put the Fighting Scots up by two goals with a creative unassisted strike.
Not to be outdone, Roger Williams received finishes from
AJ Core (Syosset, N.Y.) and
Eddie Hill (Somers, Conn.) in a minute's time to tie the game at three with 10 to play in the first half. Core struck again in the 23rd minute of regulation, feeding off a lead pass by Hill, to give Roger Williams its first advantage of the game.
Forced into comeback mode for the first time in the game, Martin completed a first-half hat-trick with just over five to go and the two teams went into the intermission tied at four goals.
Roger Williams controlled the second half of the game from beginning to end. The Hawks looked like a different team in the second 30 minutes, outshooting the Scots 26-16 and putting 15 of those on net. Gordon struggled to find the target with only two shots on goal in total over the final half of play.
The Hawks scored a trio of goals in the first three minutes of the third quarter coming off the sticks of
Eric Valenti (No. Reading, Mass.),
Nick Gagnon (Milton, Mass.) and
Doug Brown (Goldens Bridge, N.Y.).
Gordon's Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) scored the only goal of the period for the Scots with six minutes to go, but
Will Siefert (Duxbury, Mass.) made it an 8-5 game going into the final period.
Roger Williams was unrelenting during the final period, turning several fast break opportunities into quick goals. Gagnon scored three more times in the fourth to bring his season total to 29.
PJ McGovern (Garden City, N.Y.) added his first of the season.
Gordon only totaled two shots on goal in the second half, scoring both, but Roger Williams ended the game on a 7-1 run over the final 18 minutes of the game. Manganiello scored the only goal of the fourth quarter for the Scots.
The Hawks held a 26-7 advantage in shots on goal, as the Fighting Scots forced
Connor Carroll (Madison, Conn.) into only one save on the day. Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) made 12 saves for the Scots.
Gordon will look to snap a two-game losing streak on Saturday at Salve Regina. Roger Williams travels to Babson on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
