Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - St. Lawrence University kept the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team winless on the season with a 2-0 win over the Hawks Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks were aggressive early on, getting two close chances in the opening minutes.
Jordyn Labriola (Hopkinton, Mass.) had a potential breakaway broken up by a heads-up play by Saint keeper Jackie Sovie (Lisbon, N.Y.). A minute later, an SLU foul led to a free kick opportunity for
Missy Andrade (Glastonbury, Conn.). Andrade booted a long attempt on target but a bit high, grazing off the top of the crossbar.
The rest of the half was characterized by strong defense on the part of both teams. Both sides made great effort to contest the ball and limit offensive chances. Each team managed only three shots apiece through the first 30 minutes of action.
The Saints caught a break in the 37th minute, scoring the first goal of the game. A Hawk foul led to a free kick from about 30 yards out. St. Lawrence ran a four-person weave around the ball, with the final touch coming from Lindsay Geier (South Burlington, Vt.). Geier would launch a kick over the wall and into the top side of the net. Her score would help send the Saints into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
St. Lawrence would add another goal in the 54th minute to build the lead up to two. Geier brought the ball down towards the middle of the box then sent an angled pass to her right to Kayleigh White (Middleton, Mass.). She would make a move around the goalie and park a shot into the wide-open net for the second goal of the year.
In the latter part of the period, the Hawks tried to make a push, securing more chances in their offensive end of the field. RWU had a great look at a goal in the 69th minute.
Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a shot blocked by a Saint defender and roll towards Labriola on the right side of the net. She went to get a shot off but had it stopped by Saint keeper Samantha Allen (Ringwood, N.J.).
Sovie would earn the win for the Saints, playing the first half. Allen played the second half and made two saves. RWU's
Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) had four stops in the loss.
Roger Williams (0-4-1) will head to Cambridge Tuesday for a 4:00 pm road game against MIT, while St. Lawrence (4-0-0) takes on Nazareth on Friday.
