Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team suffered its second straight loss after being downed 1-4 by Westfield State University Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field on the campus of Springfield College.
With the win, Westfield State levels its record at 1-1, while the Hawks fall to 0-2 on the year. Both sides had eight shots throughout the contest, while Roger Williams held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Owls pushed forward behind three points from senior forward Kate Matroni (Hampden, Mass.).
In net, Natalia Falcone (Sutton, Mass.) picked up the win as she made three saves on the day, while for the Hawks,
Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) started for Roger Williams, and made no saves, before
Alexis Wright (Bennington, Vt.) came on in the second half and made on save in the setback.
Westfield State took an early advantage over the Hawks just 13:43 into the contest, when Bella Eduardo (Springfield, Mass.) sent a through ball to Kate Matroni (Hampden, Mass.), who was able to control the ball and find the back of the net to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
Eduardo would push Westfield State's lead to a pair in the early goings of the second half, as she gathered a ball just on the edge of the box, and lofted a shot over the hands of Wright to make it 2-0 just 6:08 into the second stanza.
Just 5:18 later, the Hawks cut their deficit in half when
Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) struck a beautiful pass through the Owls' defense, that was caught up to by
Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.), who gathered the ball and tucked a shot past Falcone to make it 2-1, Westfield, with 33:34 to play.
Westfield State would regain its two-goal lead with 25:31 to play, when Casey Rotti (Rutland, Mass.) played in a ball off of a direct free kick, that was redirected into the net from Matroni to make it 3-1, Owls. Westfield State would push its lead to three with 6:40 to play when Jocelyn Hill (Dalton, Mass.) fired a shot on cage, that rolled past Wright to seal the 4-1 win.
