Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team notched a 6-2 win over Eastern Nazarene College in the team's final game of the regular season.
The victory for the Hawks assures the team a top-two seed for the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament.
Eastern Nazarene stunned the Hawks with a quick goal within the first two minutes of the game. Victoria Hern (Salem, N.H.) brought the ball down the right side and towards the end line. She would send a cross pass through the box past a couple of Hawk defenders to Kelly Couite (West Bridgewater, Mass.) who was waiting by the far post. She was able to get the shot off and put it into the left corner of the net, quickly giving the Lions the 1-0 advantage.
The Lions' lead would be short-lived, as the Hawks came back with the equalizer in the sixth minute.
Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) sent a pass to
Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) down the right side, giving her a chance to cross the ball across the box. Similar to the ENC goal, her pass got all the way through the defense to a waiting
Ali Waxgiser (Harding, N.J.) on the far side. She would have a wide-open shot that she would easily convert.
Eastern Nazarene came back with a goal in the 18
th minute to regain the lead. Sam Bernardi (Longmeadow, Mass.) gained possession on the right side and streaked down the field and into the box. She made her way around two RWU defenders to the middle of the box and knocked in the goal.
RWU almost tied the game in the 28
th minute.
Arianna Delli Carpini (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) tapped a shot behind her to
Jodie Lavigne (Coventry, R.I.) at the top of the box. Lavigne chipped a short that was headed for the top shelf, but just bounced off the crossbar.
RWU had another chance to tie the game in the 34
th minute.
Carly Quinn (Danielson, Conn.) curved a nice pass around the Lion defender to Provost who was coming down the right side. She knocked in what would have been the equalizer but unfortunately was called offsides disallowing the goal.
The Hawks would get lucky just before the end of the half. With just under six minutes left in the period, Delli Carpini sent a long pass to Lavigne down the left side with no one in front of her. She would bring the ball into the box and left-foot a shot just pass the keeper, tying the contest at two apiece.
The 55
th minute saw both teams nearly take the lead. Kennedy Dowling (Nashua, N.H.) tapped in a shot from the right side, but was called offside just before she got the shot off. Then on the counterattack, Delli Carpini took a sliding shot from the middle of the box off of a cross but just pushed it wide right.
Roger Williams eventually broke the stalemate in the 70
th minute.
Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) got the ball in the center of the penalty area and put up a shot on goal. Her attempt would deflect off of a Lion defender and back towards Lavigne. Lavigne was able to get off the shot and tuck it just under a diving Michaela Connors (Norwell, Mass.) to give the Hawks their first lead of the game.
That goal would spark a 4-0 run for Roger Williams over the final 20 minutes of play. Delli Carpini logged a goal off of a long run in the 78
th minute, while
Sara Nerwinski (Lawrenceville, N.J.) assisted on goals by Provost and
Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the 84
th and 85
th minute.
Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) picked up the win for RWU, making two saves in the second half. Connors had 11 saves for ENC on the evening.
Roger Williams (11-7-2, 7-1-1 CCC) will host the CCC Quarterfinals on Saturday against an opponent to be determined. Eastern Nazarene ends the year at 6-12-0 and 1-8-0 in the CCC.
