Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. - The Roger Williams Women's Soccer team traveled to Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon. The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Salve Regina University women's soccer.
This was the 34th meeting between the two teams. The Hawks now own a 23-6-5 record in the all-time series and have gone 9-1-1 in the last eleven meetings against Salve Regina. Roger Williams senior
Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) scored the Hawks first goal in the sixth minute. Salve Regina junior Abby McMackin (Walpole, Mass.) scored the only goal for the Seahawks with 10 seconds remaining in the first half to make the score 2-1 at the break. Roger Williams junior
Arianna Delli Carpini (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) scored in the 36th minute to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Her goal proved to be the game-winner.
The Hawks outshot the Seahawks 11-4 in the game and 3-0 in the second half.
Still just a one-score difference late in the game the Hawks controlled things for the final twenty minutes, maintaining possession and seemingly building a wall at midfield that the Seahawks could not crack as they attempted to come back in the match. The Hawks defense did not yield a shot in the second half. Carly Pala (Milford, Conn.) made seven saves in the loss for the Seahawks and falls to 3-7-2 on the season.
Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) made two stops while improving to 5-5-2 in net for the Hawks. The Seahawks held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
"It was a good day with all the alumnae present to cheer us on and they were not going to be disappointed," said Head Coach
Tim Moody. "We scored early and on a bumpy pitch, it was a little tricky but we able to get in some good positions and cause them problems.
"We had success on both flanks and the second goal put us in a commanding position and we had hoped to get the third before half time and in doing so made the mistake, giving them an opportunity to score and they did. Not what you want, going into half time when having more ball possession and goal scoring opportunities to only lead two-one.
"In the second half, we showed we could defend a one goal lead and defend effectively. We didn't allow them a shot on goal and still were the better team on the attack, we proved we had some grit and shut up shop if we needed. We didn't get a third or fourth goal, so it was important not to concede another!
"We played with a variety of different players, systems and roles to achieve the positive outcome in the game. We were not as fluid and fast paced as we were in the first half or in most of our games but we did do what was necessary to get three points and stay tied for first place in the conference.
"Defensively we have been pretty good because we don't give the ball away to often and we can defend with ten players behind the ball. On a better pitch we could have played our preferred style but the nice thing is to have options and today the best option was something else."
The Hawks will continue conference play this Tuesday, October 14
th against Curry College.
