Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – Endicott College held off a late rally by the Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team to earn a 3-2 victory and win its second consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship.
The top-seeded Hawks entered the championship match 10-0 in conference play during the regular season. They defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology Thursday night to advance and host the CCC championship. The two-seed Endicott Gulls were 8-1 in CCC matchups and their 3-0 win over Salve Regina University on Thursday put them in Saturday's championship.
The Hawks grabbed the first point of the match on a Nicki Fallisi (Salem, N.H.) kill and then followed it with a block by Maddie Neuberger (Remsenburg, N.Y.). The home team got out to a 5-1 lead before Endicott could pull within 2. The Hawks stopped a rally with a kill by Lara Lolacono (Lynbrook, N.Y.).
Two huge kills by Neuberger and LoIacono gave the Hawks a five-point lead. The Gulls cut the lead to two with a kill by Emma Mancini, an error by Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and another kill by Mancini. The Hawks got the momentum back, though. A kill by Fallisi and two services ace by Neuberger forced Endicott to take their first timeout.
Out of the time out, the Gulls struck first on an attack error by LoIacono which was blocked by Emma Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.). Fallisi answered with a kill, but the Gulls responded with two kills of their own. The Gulls came within one but the Hawks retained possession and added two more to their lead. Fallisi's attack from the 10-foot line gave the Hawks a 21-18 lead. LoIacono's kill prompted Endicott to take their second timeout of the set. Kills by Neuberger and Grave Kenningham (Houston, Texas) moved the Hawks within one of taking the first set. A service error by Mackenzie Kennedy (Andover, Mass.) gave the Hawks the 25-19 set win.
The second set opened on a kill by Endicott's Nicole Winkler. The Hawks tied it right back up on an attack error by Emily Diezemann (Peabody, Mass.). The Gulls regained the lead with a kill by Mancini. Errors by the Hawks allowed the Gulls to get out to a 6-1 lead, forcing the higher seed to take their first timeout of the match.
The Gulls extended their lead to five on a net touch by Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.), but Fallisi picked her up with two kills. Quilty's kill stopped a Gulls rally, and the Hawks cut the lead to three after a net violation by the visiting team. LoIacono had three kills in a row which tied the set up at 12. Endicott got the lead back on a setter dump and added two more before a LoIacono kill prevented a point run.
A kill by Fallisi pulled the Hawks within one with the score at 15-16. An attack error by the Gulls tied the set back up at 17. The Hawks got their first lead of the set on a kill by Quilty which caused Endicott to take a timeout.
The Gulls tied it back up on a kill by Sheehan and then took a two-point lead on attack errors by Kenningham and Quilty. The Hawks pulled within one once again on a kill by Quilty, but the Gulls got their 22nd point on a kill by Remi Quesnelle (Sunderland, Mass.). The Hawks' 21st point came by way of kill by Kenningham but the Gulls responded to push the score to 24-21. The Hawks called a timeout. An attack error by LoIacono gave the Gulls the second set, 25-21.
The third set began with an attack error by Fallisi but Neuberger helped get the Hawks back in it with a kill. Quilty followed Neuberger's service error with a downward kill. Smith's service error was followed by a Mancini service error. Neuberger's kill pushed the Hawks to six points and then LoIacono's kill tied it at seven.
A block and attack error by Endicott allowed RWU to tie it at nine. Endicott responded by taking the lead but the Hawks grabbed two points to take the 11-10 lead. The Gulls then tied it back up. A bad set by Fields caused an attack error by LoIacono, giving the Gulls the lead, but a service error by the Gulls put the score at 12 each. The Hawks took the 14-13 lead on an attack error by Diezemann. The Gulls regained the lead with an attack error by Quilty but Kenningham's kill tied it up. Trailing 17-15, the Hawks called their first timeout of the set.
The Hawks grabbed the first point out of the timeout on a kill by Neuberger which was followed by a Kenningham kill. LoIacono's kill tied it up at 18. A handling error by the Gulls gave the Hawks the one-point lead but a kill tied it. The Hawks were the first to 20 but the Gulls quickly answered. A tip by Fallisi gave the Hawks the serve, but a kill tied it up at 21.
Fallisi's kill pushed the score to 22-21, which was responded with a Gulls kill. A kill by Quilty gave the Hawks the lead once again, but an attack error tied it at 23. A service ace by Mareena Clotfelter (Poulsbo, Wash.) gave the Gulls their 24th point and an attack error by Neuberger gave the Gulls a 2-1 set lead.
The fourth set opened with a kill by LoIacono, but was answered with a kill by the Gulls. A service error by the Gulls and a kill by Fallisi gave the Hawks a two-point lead early. The Gulls tied it up at three, but four straight points by the Hawks put the home team up 7-3. Endicott called a timeout in hopes to stop momentum.
Their strategy did not work this time as the Hawks grabbed two quick points on errors by the Gulls. Endicott finally broke the point run on an attack error by Quilty, but LoIacono's kill gave the Hawks possession for one point. A service error and attack error by the Hawks cut their lead for four, but a service error by Nicole Winkler (Southborough, Mass.) brought it back to five. The Hawks kept the pressure on and forced the Gulls to make errors. Roger Williams decided to call a timeout as they saw the Gulls trying to creep back. The score was 19-16.
Neuberger's kill out of the timeout gave the Hawks their 20th point. The Hawks' 24th point was a result of a Quilty kill and their 25th came on an attack error by Quesnelle, giving RWU the fourth set and forcing the match to go into the final tiebreaker set for the championship.
The Gulls received the first and second points of the set on attack errors by LoIacono and Kenningham. A quick timeout was called by RWU with the score at 4-1. The Hawks finally broke the Gulls' rally with an attack error by Mancini. The Gulls extended their lead to 8-2 and RWU called a timeout as the teams switched sides.
A service error gave the Hawks their third point and first out of the timeout. The Hawks pulled within four on a Kenningham kill. A dump by Fields put the score a 12-9, but a kill by Quesnelle and an attack error by LoIacono gave the Gulls 14 points.
The Hawks grabbed their 10th and 11th points, forcing the Gulls to settle their team down in a timeout. A kill by Mancini gave the Gulls their final point and the CCC Championship.
LoIacono led the team with 16 kills and Fallisi followed with 14. Fallisi also had 23 digs. Chartier had 28 digs as libero. Quilty had three total blocks and Neuberger assisted with four. Fields finished with 51 assists.
Mancini led all players with 22 kills in addition to ten digs. Quesnelle added 14 kills, with Zoey Gifford (Natick, Mass.) going for 45 assists and 19 digs.
