Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams Women's Basketball team defeated the Connecticut College Camels 68-62 Sunday afternoon in Bristol, R.I.
The 7-2 Hawks entered the nonconference matchup coming off a 10-point victory over Wheaton College Thursday night. The Camels had earned a 6-1 record prior to traveling to Bristol.
The Camels grabbed the first two points of the game with a layup by Margaret Corcoran (Milton, Mass.) just over a minute into play. Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) picked up the assist as she was double-teamed and bounced passed to a cutting Corcoran.
Turnovers hurt the Hawks early and were unable to score for two and a half minutes into play when
Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) hit a jumper.
A steal by
Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.) and fastbreak layup with six and a half minutes left gave the Hawks their first lead of the game but it was quickly erased by a layup from Casey Walsh (Phoenixville, Pa.).
Both teams had a tough time finding the bottom of the net for about four minutes and the score remained tied at eight until Walther hit her first three with just under two minutes to play. Walther followed her three up with a short floating jump shot with a minute left to put the Hawks up 13-8.
Teagan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) stripped a Camel and Margarita Delaporta (Canton, Mass.) picked up the loose ball and made her way through two defenders to score the layup with 19 seconds left. The first quarter ended with Hawks leading 15-8.
The Camels picked up the first points of the second quarter with a layup by Nancy Coulverson (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) 30 seconds into play. Coulverson used her height to shoot over Walther and cut the deficit to three with 8:16 left.
A fade-away layup by Walther forced the Camels to take their first timeout with 5:02 left. The Hawks were leading 24-14. Walther's jumper from the foul line with 2:30 left was the first score by either team since the timeout. Walsh responded with a three with just under two in the half. Two made free throws by Hynes cut the Hawks' lead to only nine with under a minute to play. At the half, the Hawks led 28-19.
The Hawks were shooting, as a team, 52% from the field, while the Camels were shooting only 24%. Walther led all scorers with 16 points. Nicholas was leading both teams with five rebounds and two blocks. Hynes had six points and four rebounds for the Camels.
The second half opened with Corcoran driving in for a layup ten seconds into play. The Camels kept their momentum going with a layup by Hynes, which forced Roger Williams University to take an early timeout. The Camels were creeping back into it with the score at 28-23, Hawks. Dunn, matched up against Hynes, found her way to the basket and scored with 8:24 left.
Corcoran completed a three-point play with a made layup and foul shot two minutes and 15 seconds in to pull within six. The Camels forced a Hawks' shot clock violation with 6:34 left. Walsh's three allowed the Camels to cut the Hawks' lead to three, but Dunn answered with two consecutive layups to extend the Hawks' lead back to seven halfway through the quarter.
Delaporta missed her two free throws with 3:56 left but found her way back to the line after being fouled trying to put back up her missed shot. She made both foul shots this time with just under four minutes. The Hawks still led 42-35.
Corcoran made two free throws for the Camels to cut the Hawks' lead to five just under seven minutes into the third quarter. Dana Muckstadt's (Dover, Mass.) first two points of the game were crucial points which pulled the Camels within three with two minutes left. Gabby Jerahian's (Quincy, Mass.) three pointer came with 10 seconds left of the quarter. The Hawks held a 49-41 going into the final quarter.
The Camels grabbed the first points of the quarter with a Coulverson layup, but Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) responded 10 seconds later with a layup of her own. A steal and breakaway layup by Corcoran pulled the Camels within four with 7:14 left.
A three by Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) with just under seven minutes left to play put the score at 53-50, still in favor of the home team. A turnover on the pass in by
Rebecca Ritchie (Hanover, Mass.) gave the Camels the ball back and a chance to tie it up. Hynes took advantage of the possession and put up a layup, but Jerahian replied at the other end of the court with a layup with six and a half left.
Caouette dribbled her way through the paint for a hook shot layup with five and a half left. Connecticut College called a timeout with the score at 57-54. Hynes' layup brought the Camels within one with 4:37 left on the clock.
Nicholas hit a long two-point jumpshot with three minutes left to extend the home team's lead back to three. Nicholas stepped up to the line with 1:56 left and hit both free throws. Walther hit a short jumper with 45 seconds left, giving the Hawks a seven-point lead. She hit one of two free throws with 34 seconds on the clock.
Walsh hit a three with 32 seconds left but a foul put Mancinelli on the line and she hit both. A three by Caroline Pangallo (Fairfield, Conn.) cut their deficit to four. Walther hit one of her two foul shots with 18 seconds left.
With 1.4 seconds left, Ritchie was given an opportunity to put the game away with two foul shots. She hit the second one to put the score at 68-62, which was the final score.
The Hawks finished the game shooting almost 53% from the field, opposed to Connecticut College's 39.1%. Walther was the top scorer of the day with 24 points. Hynes was the second highest scorer and top scorer for the Camels with 14 points.
Walsh hit three three-pointers which contributed to her total 13 points. Three Camels finished with six rebounds each.
Nicholas, who finished with 12 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had three blocks. Dunn had 10 points and six assists in the win.
The Hawks handed the Camels their second loss and moved to 8-2 before the break. The Hawks will continue their season after the holidays on January 4, 2018 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup against Wentworth Institute of Technology at home.
