Softball Splits First Two Games Of 2017

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LEESBURG, Fla. - The Roger Williams University Softball team kicked off the 2017 season with a split in the team's first two games of the year. The Hawks began with a 7-5 with over Elizabethtown College before falling 0-6 to Ohio Northern University.

Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) plated Meredith Moise (N. Reading, Mass.) in the top of the first with an RBI single. Elizabethtown grabbed the run back in the bottom of the second before the Hawks put four runs across the board in the top of the third. The key hit was a one-out two-RBI single by Sigita Ivaska (Gibsonia, Pa.) with the bases loaded.

The Blue Jays remained in the game, coming back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to pull back within one. After a pair of scoreless innings, RWU added two more in the sixth with Valerie Moran (Syosset, N.Y.) scoring on a passed ball and Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.) knocking in Moise with an RBI single.

Elizabethtown made one late push in the bottom of the inning, getting a two-out RBI double to pull within two. However, that would be all they managed, as the Hawks picked up a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh for the win.

Vesce was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Alicia McCauley (N. Reading, Mass.) and Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) each went 2-for-4. Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.) picked up the win, allowing one run in three innings of relief, while Juliet Hulme (Duxbury, Mass.) pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.

In the second game against Ohio Northern, both teams were locked into a pitcher's duel, with neither side surrendering a run over the first three innings, The Polar Bears struck first in the fourth inning with a home run for a 1-0 lead.

Ohio Northern added three more in the following inning for a 4-0 lead. The Polar Bears added two more in the seventh for a commanding 6-0 lead. The Hawks struggled offensively in the game, notching only two hits over the first five innings and only putting one runner in scoring position for the game.

Moise had two of RWU's three hits in the game, going 2-for-3. Micaela Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.) had the other hit for RWU, finishing 1-for-2. Hulme took the loss, going 4.2 innings and giving up four runs.
