Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team grabbed a pair of wins in the team's third day of competition, defeating Webster College 6-4 and Ripon College 9-4.
RWU built a five-run lead in the second inning and then held off Webster College's charge for the victory on Sunday. Webster scored four runs in the failed comeback on an error in the third, a single by Katelyn Johnson in the third, a fielder's choice by Kayla Day in the third, and a single by Abby Burroughs in the seventh.
An early lead helped propel the Hawks to victory. Roger Williams scored on a single by
Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) in the first inning, a triple by
Valerie Moran (Syosset, N.Y.) in the first inning, a single by
Meredith Moise (N. Reading, Mass.) in the second inning, and a single by
Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) in the second inning.
Webster scored three runs in the third inning, thanks to an error, a single by Katelyn Johnson, and a fielder's choice by Kayla Day.
Juliet Hulme (Duxbury, Mass.) earned the win for Roger Williams, pitching seven innings, surrendering four runs, eight hits, and striking out one. Alexis Spriggs took the loss for Webster College. She pitched seven innings, allowing six runs, 12 hits, striking out five, and walking one.
Moise, Moran, Murray, and Ledbetter each collected multiple hits for the Hawks. Murray and Moran each drove in two runs to lead Roger Williams.
Against Ripon, the Hawks grabbed an early lead on its way to the 9-4 victory. Ripon College scored four runs in the fifth inning, but RWU still managed to pull out the victory.
RWU captured the lead in the second inning when
Alicia McCauley (N. Reading, Mass.) singled with two outs in the second inning to score Moran.
Roger Williams blew the game open with six runs in the third inning. RWU scored on a triple by
Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.), and singles by Moise,
Taylor Connor (N. Reading, Mass.), and
Amanda Boulter (Wakefield, Mass.).
Ripon came back with four runs in the fifth inning, aided by a double by Tene Robinson and an error.
Vesce went 3-for-4 at the plate as she led the team with three RBI. Ledbetter and Murray each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Hailey Pretchel (Glenmont, N.Y.) pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs in the win.
