Box Score 2 Bristol, RI- The Roger Williams University softball team stayed in it until the end, but The United States Coast Guard Academy pulled away late in a 7-4 victory on Tuesday, March 21st.
The game was tied at three with The Bears batting in the bottom of the fifth when Courtney McKenna singled off of
Juliet Hulme (Duxbury, MA), driving in one run.
The Hawks lost despite out-hitting The United States Coast Guard Academy ten to five.
The Hawks had ten hits in the game. Hulme,
Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.), and Merri Moise (North Reading, MA) each collected multiple hits for RWU Hawks. Hulme led the Hawks with three hits in four at bats.
In the second game of the double header, the Hawks and The Bears passed the lead back-and-forth, but eventually The United States Coast Guard Academy prevailed 6-5. The game was tied at five with The United States Coast Guard Academy batting in the bottom of the sixth when Courtney McKenna hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run.
The Hawks again out hit The Bears 13 to ten.
The Hawks knotted the game up at five in the top of the fifth inning.
Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) drove in one when she singled in the fifth inning.
The Hawks scored three runs in the fourth inning. Hawks scored on a double by
Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) with a line drive to center field, Moise and
Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) scored.
Alicia McCauley (North Reading, MA) scored later in the fourth inning from a sacrifice fly to center field
The United States Coast Guard Academy scored four runs in the fourth inning. The big inning for The United States Coast Guard Academy came thanks to a single by Kayla Sowers, from an error, and a passed ball.
The Hawks collected 13 hits.
Alyssa Murray, Ledbetter,
Alicia McCauley, and
Valerie Moran each collected multiple hits for the Hawks. Ledbetter and
Tara Chatowsky each drove in two runs to lead the Hawks.
The Hawks are back on the field Saturday, March 25
th at Roger Williams University to take on Wentworth Institute of Technology for a conference match up at 12PM.Â
