Men’s Lacrosse Pulls Away In Second Half For Win

Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team stole the momentum that Eastern Connecticut State University had taken late in the first half by outscoring the Warriors 7-1 during an 11 minute stretch in the third quarter on the way to a 20-11 non-conference victory Thursday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

Playing its seventh road game this year, Roger Williams (5-4) handed Eastern (3-6) its fifth loss in six games. The win was the Hawks' first on Eastern's home field in three tries.

Trailing by three goals in the second quarter, Eastern closed out the half by scoring four goals in four minutes – two by sophomore attack Samuel Watson (Trumbull, Conn.). The Warriors opened the second half by scoring their fifth straight goal and led by two, 8-6, before the Hawks took over.

With the score tied at 9-all, Roger Williams ran off four in a row over five minutes --  the final two on extra-man opportunities (RWU had only three extra-man tries, but converted all three in the game) – to move out to a 13-9 lead late in the third quarter. The Warriors never got closer than three the rest of the way, as the Hawks pulled away by potting the final five goals of the match.

A winner of only 43 percent of his faceoffs this year, RWU freshman Harrison Levesque (Ridgefield, Conn.) dominated at the X by winning 23-of-33 (69.7 percent) , picking up nearly half of his team's ground balls, with 17.

Sophomore attack Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) and senior midfielder AJ Core (Syosset, N.Y.) led RWU with four goals and two assists apiece, but four additional players contributed at least two goals each. Freshman goalie Dolan Jones (Levittown, N.Y.) won his second decision without a loss in his second start, making 13 saves.

Eastern committed a season-low ten turnovers but was outscored 14-4 in the second half and outshot 50-35 in the game.

Junior attack Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Warriors with three goals and unloaded ten of the team's shots. Watson had a team-high five ground balls to go along with his two goals. Junior goalie Chris Gorman (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made 11 saves over 54 minutes and was lifted in favor of freshman Taylor Huta (Waterford, Conn.) with Eastern trailing, 17-11, with 5:42 left.
