Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team edged Nichols College 4-2 in a low scoring Commonwealth Coast Conference contest Thursday afternoon.
The four goals for Roger Williams is the least amount scored in a win in program history, besting the previous mark of five, set in a 5-4 victory over Farmingdale State on March 17, 2015.
All of the scoring for both teams came in the first half of play, setting up a defensive struggle in the second half for the two squads.
Nichols jumped on the board early in the game with an unassisted goal by MacKenzie Martin (Merrimack, N.H.) at the 10:56 mark. Then four minutes later, Casey Campanale (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took a pass from Reece O'Connor (North Grafton, Mass.) and buried a shot in net for a 2-0 Bison lead.
Nichols nearly went into the second quarter with the lead, but a late penalty lead to a man-up goal with 13 seconds left in the first quarter.
Chris Bova (Somers, Conn.) found
Jude Marzec (Falmouth, Maine) for RWU's first score of the game.
Roger Williams would eventually tie the game up eight minutes before halftime on a
Justin MacIntyre (Norwalk, Conn.) goal.
AJ Core (Syosset, N.Y.) followed that up with the go-ahead tally at the 5:38 mark, with
John Lisitano (Guilford, Conn.) adding an insurance goal a minute later.
That would prove to be the only goals of the game, as both teams went scoreless over the next two quarters. Timely goalkeeping by Nichols' James Keane (Franklin, Mass.) and RWU's
Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) kept the contest at 4-2 in favor of the Hawks. Nichols also did a strong job of killing penalties, as the Hawks went 0-for-5 in the second half on man-up opportunities.
Core finished with a goal and eight ground balls.
Shawn Errasti (Duxbury, Mass.) logged four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Nolan stopped 13 shots for Roger Williams on the day.
Campanale and Martin scored a goal each, with Hugh O'Donnell (Charlestown, Mass.) adding three ground balls and one caused turnover. Keane had 16 saves in net for Nichols, including ten in the second half.
Roger Williams (8-5, 4-1 CCC) heads to Western New England on Wednesday while Nichols (7-7, 1-5 CCC) heads to Becker on Saturday.
