Box Score 2 WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon outlasted Roger Williams 3-1 in a pitcher's duel in game one to split a home doubleheader with a vaunted Hawks squad projected as a top Commonwealth Coast Conference contender. The Hawks flexed their muscle in game two, piling up eight runs on their way to an 8-4 victory.
Roger Williams inches their CCC mark to 8-2, while improving to 16-11 overall. Gordon took another step closer to double-digit wins at 9-13 overall and 5-5 in the conference.
Game One
Rookie starter Caitlin Catalanotto (Kingston, N.H.) was calm and collected in the circle for the home side, pitching herself out of jams in several innings. Roger Williams threatened to put the first points on the board in the second, but left the bases loaded on a groundout back to the pitcher. The Hawks also stranded two runners in the first and third innings.
Gordon took advantage with the opportunities by tacking two on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Catalanotto led off the inning with a single, before being replaced by Katie Dariano (Albany, N.Y.) on the base path due to a fielder's choice. Dariano's speed allowed her to score easily on a double for Megan Jenkerson (McDonough, Ga.). Jenkerson was eventually ushered to third on an error before scoring on a quirky squeeze play where she slid under the tag at home plate.
The 2-0 score remained until the bottom of the fifth inning when Jenkerson was at it again. The sophomore got all of a ball, sending it over the centerfield wall to make it a 3-0 game.
Roger Williams loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, but Gordon limited them to just one run on a pair of fly balls to the deep parts of the outfield.
The Hawks outhit Gordon 6-4, but Catalanotto struck out a game-high five batters to earn her seventh victory. RWU's
Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.) led the Hawks with two hits in the game.
Game Two
Roger Williams would not be denied of scoring in the second game as catcher
Micaela Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.) put the Hawks on top early with a two-RBI single to left field.
Gordon got one back in the bottom of the first on a single up the middle by Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.), but Roger Williams put a five-spot in the next half inning to take firm control over the game. The Hawks put all five on the board after a potential inning-ending playing, leading to all runs being unearned against Abigail Knowlton (Deer Isle, Maine). Pohl worked her magic again with another RBI single, while Vesce and Murray added RBI one-baggers.
For the second time in the series, Jenkerson homered, this time a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The two programs traded runs in the sixth inning for a final score of 8-4, including Jenkerson's fifth RBI of the day on another double. She was 3-for-3 in game two and 5-for-6 on the day with four extra-base hits.
Juliet Hulme (Duxbury, Mass.) went the distance for the Hawks with five strikeouts and only three earned runs allowed. She also knocked in a run.
Only two of the eight runs scored by the visitors were earned in game two. Four different Hawks had at least two hits with Pohl leading the way with three RBI.
