Box Score 2 NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team advanced to the final day of competition in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament with a pair of shutout wins, defeating #8 Gordon 6-0 and #4 Endicott 2-0.
In the opener against Gordon, the Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when
Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) scored on an overthrown ball by the Fighting Scot catcher attempting to throw out
Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.H.) at second.
RWU's one-run lead would hold up over the next five innings as Gordon was unable to get a runner across. The Hawks broke the game open in the sixth inning with five runs in the frame.
Rachel Wandzilak drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by two-RBI base hits from
Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.) and
Micaela Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.) (zto put RWU up 6-0. Roger Williams would retire the side in the seventh to earn the win.
Wandzilak tossed a three-hit shutout for the Hawks in the win, striking out four and walking two. Ledbetter was 2-for-4 with run scored while Moise and Pohl each finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
In the second game, Roger Williams and Endicott were locked in a pitcher's duel over the first four innings of play. Both teams threatened to score, with Endicott getting a runner at third in the opening inning while Roger Williams put runners at second and third in the second. However, neither team managed to score.
The Hawks finally broke through in the fifth inning, scoring both runs with two outs. Vesce and
Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) posted RBI singles to give Roger Williams its only runs of the game. That would be all Murray needed to earn the victory, as she set allowed only one hit over the final two innings to give RWU the victory.
Murray struck out seven in the shutout win while giving up six hits. Vesce, Ledbetter, and Pohl each finished 1-for-3 in the game.
Roger Williams (25-17) will take on Western New England Saturday at 11:00am.
