Women’s Soccer Plays Wellesley To Draw

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – A late second-half goal by Wellesley College help snap a four-game winless streak as the team played the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team to a 2-2 double overtime tie Tuesday afternoon.

It did take long for the Hawks to grab the first goal of the game. Seven minutes into the contest, Alli Santacroce (Burlington, Conn.) chipped a pass from the right side over the defense and to the middle of the penalty area. The ball found the foot of Carly Quinn (Danielson, Conn.), who lofted a shot just over the keeper and into the middle of the net, putting RWU up 1-0.

The first part of the opening period saw a lack of offensive chances for either side. Quinn's goal would be the only shot taken by Roger Williams in the first 25 minutes of play, while Wellesley was held to a single shot as well. Gabriela Portilla (West Windsor, N.J.) knocked a shot off of a free kick in the third minute that was punched over the goal by RWU's Natalie O' Donovan (Quincy, Mass.)

The Hawks would add another goal in the 28th minute off of a penalty kick. Wellesley committed a foul in the penalty area, taking down a Roger Williams player attempting to get in front of the ball on a pass. That would lead to Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) stepping up and burying the penalty shot in the left corner for her third goal of the year.

Wellesley almost went into halftime trailing by two but mounted their first score in the 41st minute. Melise Knowles (Diablo, Calif.) was able to secure the loose ball on the left side of the box and catch RWU out of position. She would then put a shot into the right corner of the goal to bring her team back within one entering halftime.

Twice in the early part of the second half, Roger Williams had a good opportunity to score but just missed putting the ball in net. In the 49th minute, Morgan Snow (Rowley, Mass.) had a shot from the center that she just hooked around the left corner of the net. Then Santacroce tried to bend one in from the right side in the 56th minute, but her shot also traveled wide left.

The Hawks appeared to be headed to the win in regulation but Wellesley tied the game with just under five minutes left. Kendall You Mak (San Francisco, Calif.) bent a pass around the defense to Gabriella Portilla (West Windsor, N.J.) who just managed to stay onsides and score despite the Hawks' protests.

After the first overtime period in which neither side attempted a shot, Wellesley had the best chance by either side to end the game in the 104th minute. Carley Phillips (Waterford, Conn.) chipped a good pass to Knowles who was open for a good shot. However, she pushed her shot a bit too far to the right.

Olivia Reckley (Grosse Ile, Mich.) had eight saves for Wellesley, while O'Donovan made three saves of her own.

"We are extremely disappointed not to come away with the win tonight," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "At two nil it was the feeling that only one team was going to get a positive result out of the game, we looked like more goals were in the side and that we could score four or five. However, we were not clinical enough in front of their goal to go along with their keeper making save after save in the first half.

"Had we got the third before half time and kept them off the scoreboard it was or would have been game over. Giving up a goal right on half time gave them something to play for and they did just that, it was more challenging in the second half and even though we were on top and had more possession we didn't make it count. Two-two was a fair reflection on the outcome of the competition, the game, the soccer match. Neither team did enough to win or lose.

"Hopefully moving forward these lessons from tonight's game will make us play quicker and be more decisive in front of the opponent's keeper, to find the back of the net, score the goals and win the game out right!"

Roger Williams (2-4-1) takes on Emmanuel on Thursday, while Wellesley (1-4-2) will be back in action on Saturday against Mount Holyoke.
