Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Springfield College women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half en route to a 4-0 win over Roger Williams on Saturday evening at Brock-Affleck Field. With the win, the Pride is now 2-0, while the Hawks fall to 0-2.
Springfield College held a 12-9 shot advantage over 90 minutes of play, while Roger Williams had four corner kicks in the setback. In net for the Pride, Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) picked up her second-consecutive shutout, as she made four saves, while Izzy Inglese (Wolcott, Conn.) came on for the final 13:16 to preserve the win. Roger Williams' starting goalkeeper,
Alexis Wright (Quincy, Mass.), made four stops in the loss.
For the Pride, junior forward Amanda Wright (Pittsfield, Mass.) made her second-career start and buried a pair of goals in the first half, while Mary Silva (Ludlow, Mass.) and Gabrielle Fernandes (North Smithfield, R.I.) each netted one in the second half to complete the 4-0 win.
Springfield College got on the board first with a quality offensive play, as Dakota Kelly (Bethany, Conn.) sent a ball into the corner for Mikaela Coady (Middletown, Conn.), who then sent a cross towards the net, finding Wright, who pulled in the loose ball and found the back of the net to make it 1-0, Pride, with 27:27 on the clock.
Wright pushed Springfield's lead to a pair with less than 11 minutes until half, as the junior took the ball on the right flank and sent a high arching shot over the defense that knocked off the left post and into the back of the net to make it 2-0, Pride.
Just 16:08 into the second half, Springfield College pushed its lead to three when Aly Morell (New Britain, Conn.) sent a direct free kick into the box, which was kicked around in a scrum before Silva came away with the ball and knocked one past
Alexis Wright to make it 3-0, Pride. Just over ten minutes later, Springfield College made it 4-0 when Sara Swetland (Manchester, N.H.) touched a pass to Fernandes, who let a beauty of a shot go over the outstretched arms of Wright and into the back of the net with 18:04 to play.
"I am more than happy with how we are progressing with the returners as well as the new additions to this year's squad of players," said Head Coach
Tim Moody. "It is a squad game and everyone will get their chance to help the team as the season moves along."
"If you didn't go to the game tonight, you would think looking at the scoreline we were outclassed but far from it. Obviously, we do have areas that are not perfect yet but we have time to address those issues and solve problems to have a different outcome.
"There were major areas and instances in the game when we looked world-class and it was like watching a professional team play soccer. However we allowed a few individual mistakes cost us dearly which had a result on the outcome of the game. If you remove them from the game we are making a very well-coached team work hard to break us down.
"There is no hiding the fact we play quality competition every season because it makes the game more rewarding and enjoyable. We play a challenging schedule, and that allows us to point out things we need to work on before we get into conference play.
"Self-belief is important and staying the course will see us turn good performances into results. We are not the finished product just yet but we are a lot closer to teams in the past that have done amazing things at this point of the season. If others underestimate us it will be their biggest mistake they can make and lead to their own down fall.
"We are extremely confident that this team that graduated arguably the best female player of all-time last year as well as a two time All-American the previous year will find new stars to keep us on top of the conference. Only time will tell...We will give it another go on Wednesday when we take on Conn College!"
