Women’s Soccer Ties With Endicott

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team played to a scoreless double overtime draw against CCC rival Endicott College Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest.

Kayla LaRosa (Newington, Conn.) came close to logging the first tally of the game in the ninth minute. Morgan Snow (Rowley, Mass.) served up a corner kick to the middle of the box. LaRosa gained possession and attempted a chip shot over the goalie. However, she would send the shot just a bit hit as it glanced off the crossbar. The Gull defense was able to clear the ball before RWU could make a second attempt on the ball.

Both teams played at a high-level pace for a majority of the first half. It proved to be difficult for either side to get clean shots off. The midfielders and defenders for RWU and EC continuously made plays on the ball to force the offense into difficult positions.

However, the closing minutes of the first half had close chances on both sides. For Endicott in the 39th minute, a misplayed ball by RWU led to a wide open shot for Emilee Kemnitz (Southington, Conn.). She tried to put one in the right corner, but a diving stop by Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) kept the Gulls off the board.

A minute later, Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) split the defense with a great pass to Gabbi Rozumek (Woodstock, Vt.) up the middle. She almost was able to have a clear chance on net, but in the process of sidestepping defenders, she allowed EC's Shelby Elwell (Litchfield, Conn.) to move into position for the save.

The second half began similar to the first, with contention for the ball by both teams. RWU's Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) and EC's Rachel Hanna (Chelmsford, Mass.) had the lone shots for either team over the first ten minutes of play. However Hanna's attempt was closer to scoring, as she hit it dead-on at O'Donovan.

Rozumek had a second chance at a goal in 71st minute. Kasey Porvost (Peabody, Mass.) had a shot that bounced off of a Gull defender and back towards Rozumek. She tried to make an off-balance shot on net, but would be stopped by Elwell in net.

Neither side would be able to put a goal on the board by the end of regulation, leading to overtime for the contest. In the extra period, each side logged only one shot each in the period, with an attempt by EC's Sharlotte Pernice and RWU's Rozumek. Both shots would be saved by the keeper.

In the final minute of double overtime, Alli Santacroce (Burlington, Conn.) almost ended the game with a shot off of a free kick. Her attempt was on target but went over the crossbar by a couple of feet.

Elwell and O'Donovan each finished with six saves on the day.

"It was another classic between 2 quality programs who's goal it is every season to finish up on top of the CCC Conference," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "Even without any goals, it was a hard fought match, plenty of action at both ends. Our goalkeeper made saves, their goalkeeper made saves, our defenders cleared the ball off the line, they blocked shots goal bound off the line. This is how we play ever season, it a great spectator sport and even better to be a player.

"You don't have to have goals for there to be excitement, obviously we would have liked to have snatched a victory, a win in regulation or in overtime, but it wasn't to be. It is a shame we don't play home and away in conference. I would like to see it and I think the players would enjoy too!

"We are slowly but surely finding our feet with the addition of the new freshmen and the graduation of six starting seniors. This group has its own dynamic and we can play, we can compete and we will go on to win more games than we lose. We play against good teams and are tested every time we step on the pitch, we don't lose we learn and today was no different. We learned what we need to improve on what we are good at early on during the season.

"By the time we have played every team in the CCC we should be in a better place the time playoffs come around."

Roger Williams (3-4-2, 1-0-1 CCC) will be back in action Monday at WPI. Endicott (3-3-1, 1-0-1 CCC) hosts Babson on Wednesday.
