Hawks Blank Nor'Easters 1-0

Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team shut out the University of New England 1-0 Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

In the 74th minute, Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) scored to give the Hawks the lead.

The deciding play started on the right wing with Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.), who found a cutting Carly Quinn (Danielson, Conn.) heading towards the near corner of the box. Quinn sent her second touch bending wide-left, and Provost crashed the crease to angle a mid-air flick into the left side of the cage.

UNE had a quality chance at an equalizer in the 80th minute, but the one-timer on a dipping cross to the back post whistled just high.

Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) recorded three saves for the Hawks. Her season record moved to 4-4-2 overall.

With the victory, the Hawks move to 5-5-2 (2-0-1 CCC) on the year. The Nor'easters drop back to 5-5 overall (1-2 CCC).

"Winning the game was the most important thing today as we have already dropped two points against Endicott last Saturday," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "We dominated possession and created twice as many scoring opportunities as UNE and with one quality sequence we achieved the outcome we were looking for which was to secure the win with the only goal of the game.

"We scored a goal worthy of winning any game of soccer. We worked the ball forward and with a second phase of play we got a quality delivery into the box from Carly, which led to Kasey picking up her second game winning goal in a week. She beat her defender to the spot to redirect it past a very good keeper, who had kept us at bay all afternoon.

"We were brave and took the game to them, we were prepared to attack and get forward and left ourselves exposed to the counter attack once too often. Fortunately we were not punished and survived a few scares but the reward puts us joint top on the CCC. We did what we needed to do, we did bend on defense but we didn't break. Every game so far this season has been won by a shutout, so if we can keep the other team off the scoreboard, the odds are in our favor, we can score and we will win more games!

"We were driven to succeed today and it was great to watch. Winning a game of soccer is never a sure thing, you can be in control, make one mistake and you lose. We stayed the course and won an important road victory. All the players are excited to be involved with what we are trying to accomplish this season and as a group we are progressing.

"We are getting better ever time we step on the pitch, in every facet of the game. Some players have been asked to take on new roles and positions for the benefit of the team, which they all embracing this challenge. They understand it is not about individuals but what is best for the program short and long term."

The Hawks return home to face Bridgewater State University Wednesday in Bristol, R.I.
