Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team defeated Gordon College Tuesday evening in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals with a final score of 74-36.
The Hawks were off to a good start in the first quarter.
Teagan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) was the first to score in the quarter. Roger Williams kept up a good offensive rhythm early, even while Gordon tried to catch up. Jenna Olson (Rutland, Vt.) scored a three pointer with 5:43 left to play to pull Gordon within four. Olson kept it a close game later, scoring another three-pointer with 2:00 left to play to bring the Fighting Scots within two. However, it was CCC Player of the Year
Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) who made the last shot with 1:05 left in the quarter, with RWU ending the quarter with a 17-13 lead.
Gordon tried to catch up as Meghan Foley (Malden, Mass.) made the first shot two minutes into the quarter. Yet Roger Williams maintained the lead as Gabby Jerahian (Quincy, Mass.) made a layup to keep RWU up by five. With 3:34 left to play, Nicholas scored to give the Hawks a 25-15 advantage. Gordon's Foley may have made the final basket, but it was the Hawks that were leading 30-19 with the quarter ending.
Roger Williams had the ball at the start of the third quarter and Nicholas made the first shot ten seconds in. Her shot helped Roger Williams begin the period on a 10-0 run to take a 21-point lead with 5:47 left. Brooke Dyson (Houston, Texas) later hit a three to make it 27-44 but RWU scored four straight points to go back up by 21. Then with a mere second left in the quarter, Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) made a three-pointer to end the quarter 53-30 in RWU's favor.
The Hawks maintained the lead throughout the fourth quarter. With 7:38 left in the game, Nicholas made a layup to put RWU up by 30 (61-31). Jess Ryan (Milford, N.H.) made the last point on a free throw for the Fighting Scots with 3:39 left to play. After that, the Hawks ended the game with the final six points to earn the win.
Nicholas led the team with 28 points and seven rebounds, followed by Leone with 11 points and Jerahian with eight points. Dunn added four points, six rebounds, and five blocks.
Olson scored 10 points, Foley and Ryan scored eight points respectively, and Brooke Dyson scored seven points. Sarah Gibbs (Elizabethtown, Pa.) added three points and ten rebounds.
Roger Williams (22-4) will take on #3 Endicott College on Thursday night. Gordon College ends the year at 8-18.
