Men’s Lacrosse Wins First Game of the Season

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse Team won their first game of the season over Lasell College on Wednesday night with a final score of 10-8.
 
Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) opened the game with a goal at 13:45, taking a pass from Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) to put the Hawks up 1-0. Marzec kept the Hawks going strong with a pass to Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) to put the Hawks up 2-0 at 11:09.
 
With 6:27 left in the first quarter, the duo of Grier and Marzec converted another shot on goal to put the Hawks up 3-0. Lasell, determined to score in the first quarter, grabbed a goal from Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass.) with an assist from Alex McCormack-Kuhman (Wells, Maine) with 1:47 left. The first quarter ended with the Hawks up 3-1.
 
Both teams remained scoreless for the first nine and a half minutes of the second quarter until Austin Shindoll (Denver, Col.) scored an unassisted goal for the Lasers at 5:21. RWU quickly came back with an unassisted goal from Scott Trudel (Manchester, Vt.) off the following faceoff, putting the score at 4-2. Madden then scored his second goal of the game for Lasell at 2:54 to cut the deficit to one. Less than a minute later, McCormack-Kuhman scored another goal for the Lacers at 2:05 to tie the game.
 
After a few shots on goal, Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) scored for the Hawks at 1:12 to put the Hawks back up at 5-4. Lasell did not back down though with David Sheehan (Tewskbury, Mass.) scoring a goal 10 seconds later to send the game into halftime tied at five.
 
The Lacers took their first lead of the game at 10:54 in the third with a goal by Mike Susi (Gorham, Maine) off of a pass from Andrew Fidalgo (Wilbraham, Mass.). Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored for RWU to tie the game for the third time at 6-6 with 8:44 left in the third quarter. The Hawks gained their lead once again at 6:39 with a goal from Mullane assisted by Justin MacIntyre (Norwalk, Conn.).
 
Determined to extend RWU's lead, Grier scored with an assist by Bova at 4:52 to put the score at 8-6. The teams went back and forth with Shindoll scoring his second goal of the game assisted by Susi at 4:01 to cut the Hawks' deficit to one. Bova came back for RWU with an unassisted goal to put the score at 9-7. RWU remained strong to gain their biggest lead of three at 47.7 seconds with an unassisted goal by Mullane.
 
The final quarter started with a goal from Susi taking a pass from Austin Tomasetti (Elmsford, N.Y.) at 13:57 to bring the Lasers within two. However, that would be the only goal for either side as both teams remained scoreless for the rest of the game, giving RWU the 10-8 win.
 
Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) had 11 saves in the win. Bova led the Hawks with four points (2 G, 2 A). Mullane and Grier contributed with three goals each. Jack Sylvia (Nantucket, Mass.) added four three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
 
Susi led the Lacers with three points (2 G, 1 A). Madden and Shindoll contributed with two goals each. Ryan Janovic (East Lyme, Conn.) also made 11 saves in the loss.
 
Roger Williams (1-0) will host Trinity College on Saturday. Lassell (0-1) will travel to Western New England on Saturday.
