Softball Stalled By RPI and Rutgers-Newark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEOLA, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team had its offense held in check Thursday as the Hawks dropped a pair of games 0-5 to RPI and 0-3 to Rutgers-Newark.
 
The first game was a scoreless stalemate through seven innings. Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) held the Engineers to only three hits and two walks while Sarah Harms and Jamie Cleasby combined for one hit and two walks over the same stretch.
 
In the extra inning, RPI took the lead with a two-RBI double from Veronica DeStefano. They would add three more runs for a commanding five-run lead. The Hawks could not rally in the bottom half of the inning, stranding a runner at third as the Engineers took the win.
 
Murray went 7.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) with three strikeouts. Taylor Connor (North Reading, Mass.) had RWU's only hit of the game, a double in the seventh.
 
In the second game, Rutgers-Newark took the lead on a triple in the second inning from Samantha Hoffman. They would add two more runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and error.
 
The pitching was strong on both sides. Rutgers-Newark's Paige Masiello struck out four, while RWU's Hailey Prechtel (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.) combined for one K and two unearned runs.
 
Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) doubled in the third inning for the Hawks' only hit.
 
Roger Williams (1-9) ends Spring Break against Ohio Wesleyan and Bethany on Friday.
