Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse posted a 12-6 non-conference win over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Thursday afternoon.
The game was postponed one day due to yesterday's Nor'Easter yielding unfavorable playing conditions.
The Hawks had all the momentum early on, scoring the first four goals of the game. Peter Navarro (Londonderry, N.H.) scored the first two within the first five minutes of the contest. They were also the first two of his collegiate career. Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) added a man-up goal at the 5:46 mark, followed by a Chris Bova (Ridgefield, Conn.) tally two minutes later. Mike Rizzo (Bridgewater, Mass.) ended the Hawk run with his second score of the season, a man-up goal off of a pass from Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.). However, RWU got the goal right back in the closing seconds of the quarter, with Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) logging a goal off of an assist from Andrew Gaffney (Cherry Valley, Mass.).
Rizzo pulled the Corsairs within two with his goal at the 13:39 mark, but that would be the only goal for UMass-Dartmouth in the second. Gaffney, Jack Sylvia (Nantucket. Mass.), and Sebastian Suarez (West Hartford, Conn.) each scored in the quarter to give the Hawks an 8-2 advantage going into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Corsairs managed to finally find their rhythm offensively. Prozinski, Tom Donahue (Gloucester, Mass.), and Jordan Torres (New Bedford, Mass.) each scored within the first seven minutes to cut the deficit to two (6-8). Mullane helped end the UMD run with a man-up goal from Bova with 5:32 left in the period to help the Hawks go into the final quarter with a three goal lead.
The Hawk defense managed to hold UMass-Dartmouth scoreless in the final quarter, the team's first shutout quarter of the season. Marzec and Suarez combined for three goals to help extended the lead and give RWU the six-goal win.
Weston Nolan (Falmouth, Maine) made a season-high 17 saves for RWU in the win. Marzec scored three goals with an assist, while Bova finished with a game-high five points (1 G, 4 A). Sylvia had five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Kyle Taylor (Raynham, Mass.) had two saves in the loss with reserve goal Ted McCaffrey (Pepperell, Mass.) stopping seven shots. Torres and Rizzo each had two goals with Prozinski chipping in with three points (1 G, 2 A). Jack O'Brien had a game-high four caused turnovers along with four ground balls.
Roger Williams (2-1) will head down to Pennsylvania to take on Haverford College Sunday. UMass-Dartmouth (1-2) has the rest of the week off and will host Emmanuel next Thursday.
