Softball Absorbs Pair Of Losses To RIC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I.--The Rhode Island College softball team swept intra-state rival Roger Williams in a non-conference doubleheader played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Tuesday. RIC posted a 9-5 win in the opener and completed the sweep with an 11-8 victory in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE

Roger Williams capitalized on a pair of RIC errors in the top of the first to plate an unearned run and the 1-0 advantage. RIC responded in the bottom of the first when an RBI double from junior catcher Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) knotted the game at 1-1 and an RBI single from senior first baseman Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT) put the Anchorwomen up 2-1.

RIC tacked on four runs in the bottom of the second inning, which included RBI singles from Simmons and senior shortstop Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI). The visiting Hawks closed the gap to 6-3 in the top of the third on a two-run double from junior Michaela Pohl (Middleboro, MA). RIC responded in the bottom of the frame as an RBI single from freshman right fielder Erica Fluskey (Trumbull, CT) gave the Anchorwomen the 7-3 advantage.

Roger Williams cut into the lead in the top of the sixth when a two-run double from sophomore right fielder Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, RI) made the score 7-5. That would be as close as the Hawks would get, however as a two-run double from junior center fielder Michaela Deangelis (North Providence, RI) propelled RIC to the 9-5 victory.

Venturini went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Simmons went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win for the Anchorwomen. Junior Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) picked up the complete-game win for RIC, allowing five runs on eight hits in seven innings.

Tara Chatowsky went 2-for-3 in the loss for Roger Williams. Junior Hailey Prechtel (Glenmont, NY) suffered the loss for Roger Williams, giving up six runs on four hits in one inning of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO

Schott staked RIC to an early lead in the first inning with a three-run homer. Roger Williams grabbed the lead in the top of the second inning when they pushed across six runs, which included a two-run inside the park home run from freshman Michaela Federico (Walpole, MA) for the 6-3 advantage. RIC plated an unearned run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 6-4.

The Anchorwomen erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fourth, including an RBI groundout from Gough, to take the 8-6 lead. RIC added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the 11-6 advantage. Roger Williams chipped away with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough as RIC held on for the 11-8 victory.

Schott went 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBI, while DeAngelis was 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the win. Junior Erica Fleming (Sagamore Beach, MA) recorded the victory for RIC, giving up eight runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.

Freshman Ellie Fleming (Marshfield, MA) suffered the loss in the pitching circle for Roger Williams, giving up six runs on seven hits in three innings. Federico was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in the setback for the Hawks.
