Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Lacrosse team could not make the late comeback against Western New England University Saturday afternoon, as the Hawks were downed 12-8.
Prior to the game, the four seniors of RWU Men's Lacrosse, Owen Love (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), Justin MacIntyre (Norwalk, Conn.), Tim Walch (Wilson, N.Y.), and Eddie Hill (Somers, Conn.), were honored for their contributions over the past four years.
In the game, Western New England's Nick Gamba (East Islip, N.Y.) posted a goal less than a minute into the game for a quick lead. Gabe Reale (Fairfield, Conn.) tied the game at the 8:45 mark, but back-to-back goals for Gamba and Brendan Lyons (Syosset, N.Y.) brought WNE up by three. MacIntyre and Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.) would score for RWU to tie up the game, with Mullane's goal coming with 0.3 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Golden Bears scored three straight goals over the first eight minutes of the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead. Jude Marzec (West Islip, N.Y.) halted the run with a goal at the 6:54 mark, but Johnny Shahpazian (New Providence, N.J.) had the last goal of the second to help give WNE a 7-4 halftime lead.
The third saw a lack of scoring for either team, as Reale scored the first goal of the quarter with 6:24 left. Mullane would add another goal in the closing seconds but RWU still trailed 6-8 going into the fourth.
The Golden Bears added a pair of goals early on but Mullane and Peter Navarro (Londonderry, N.H.) brought RWU back within two with just over four minutes left to play. However, Gamba and Matthew Greer (South Windsor, Conn.) logged the final two tallies of the game to get the win for Western New England.
Steven Kerr (Hopkinton, Mass.) had five saves in the win. Gamba scored six goals for WNE while Hunter Cocks (Walden, N.Y.) won 14 of 21 faceoffs.
Ryan Bannon (Hopkinton, Mass.) made four saves in the loss for RWU. Reale finished with three points (2 G, 1 A). Brian Brockwell (Duxbury, Mass.) had three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Roger Williams (6-7, 2-4 CCC) heads to Nichols on Wednesday, while Western New England (9-5, 6-0 CCC) hosts Williams on Tuesday.
