Softball Falls In Two To Western New England

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team fell to Western New England 5-2 and 8-0 (5 inn.) in the team's final Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader of the season.

Prior to the first pitch, RWU seniors Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) and Valerie Moran (Syosset, N.Y.) were honored for their contributions over the past four years.

Hawk hurler Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.) got into a bit of trouble in the opening inning. She posted a lead-off walk to Allie Buzzeo (Stamford, Conn.) and a base hit to Lindsay Williams (Coventry, Conn.) in her first two batters. After an infield fly, she walked Aimee Kistner (Taunton, Mass.) to load the bases. Tori Fisher (Poestenkill, N.Y.) was then grazed by a pitch to bring in the first run of the game. A fielder's choice to second base allowed Williams to score and keep the inning going. Fortunately for Wandzilak, she was able to get a strikeout to end the inning and hold Western New England to only two.

Wandzilak would settle into a groove after the opening inning, allowing only one base hit over the second and third innings. In the fourth, an infield hit and wild pitch put Sydney Pounds (Milford, Mass.) at second for WNE, but Micaela Pohl (Middleboro, Mass.) was able to pick her off with a throw back to second. A force out at short and a fly out to right field got Wandzilak out of the inning.

The Hawk offense was held down over the first four innings. Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) got on via a lead-off walk in the second. Amanda Boulter (Wakefield, Mass.) sacrificed her over to second but she was thrown out at third trying to take the extra base. She would be later stranded at second after getting a two-out double to center.

In the top of the fifth, a one-out single, double, and walk loaded the bases for Western New England. A hard-hit ball by Cassidy Howe (North Andover, Mass.) to the third baseman brought home Jenn Luba (Plymouth, Conn.) while a bases-loaded walk for Pounds scored another run. A diving stop and throwout by Taylor Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) at third helped hold the Golden Bears to only one more run scored in the inning. WNE would take a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.

Boulter began the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off single. Katrina Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.) would step up next and bring her home with a hard-hit double to left field to get RWU on the board. The sixth inning saw RWU continue to rally. Alexis Romano (Shirley, N.Y.) punched a base hit to left, followed by Pohl being hit by a pitch and Tara Chatowsky singling to right. Moran brought home Romano with a sac fly to right to bring RWU within three. However the Golden Bears were able to escape without allowing any more runs. In the bottom of the seventh, after back-to-back line outs, Ledbetter and Romano both singled to bring the tying run to the plate. However, WNE got a swinging strikeout to end the game.

Kistner struck out nine with two runs allowed in the complete game win. Luba and Linsday Williams both finshed 2-for-4 with a run.

Wandzilak gave up five runs in 4.1 innings in the loss. Tara Chatowsky and Romano both had two hits in the game.

In the second game, the Golden Bears added a pair of runs in the top of the first. After a two-out error prolonged the inning. Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.) hit an RBI single to left to bring home Luba. Kistner would also score on a misplayed ball off the cutoff throw, giving Western New England a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks looked poised for a big inning in the bottom of the second. Walks by Goria and Tara Chatowsky and a single by Boulter helped load the bases with only one out. Yet WNE was able to get out of the inning with a forceout at home and a strikeout to keep RWU scoreless.

Western New England began the third with three straight singles, capped off by a two-run single from Luba to give WNE a four-run lead. Uliase would also notch an RBI groundout to put Western New England up 5-0.

The Golden Bears tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth. Uliase posted a two-RBI base hit just inside the right field line while Luba scored from third on a misplayed ball at second.

RWU tried to keep the game going in the bottom of the fifth, with Ledbetter and Romano getting in scoring position with two outs. However a strikeout ended the comeback bid for RWU.

Uliase pitched four scoreless innings in the win while also going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Luba was 1-for-2 with three runs and two RBI.

Hailey Pretchel (Glenmont, N.Y.) allowed five runs (two earned) in 2.0 innings. Boulter and Ledbetter each finished 1-for-2.

On Tuesday, Roger Williams (6-27-1, 5-12-1 CCC) hosts Johnson & Wales while Western New England (19-15, 12-6 CCC) will play Springfield.
