Alumni Profile: Alexandra Brown '15 (Women's Tennis)

Welcome to the newest RWU Athletics weekly feature, Alumni Profiles. Here we will be featuring a former Roger Williams student-athlete and catching up with them on their career since graduating from RWU.

Our next entry comes from Alexandra Brown. Alexandra was a four-year member of the Women's Tennis team and graduated from RWU in 2015 as a Biology and Mathematics Major. She finished her career with a .763 singles winning percentage, tied for the sixth-best mark in program history. She was a two-time All-CCC selection and in her senior year, she was honored as CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and received the James Russo Award as the graduating female senior student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average.

What is your current job title and what does that entail?
I am a Veterinarian at Germantown Parkway Animal Hospital and Animal Emergency Center. As a veterinarian, I provide healthcare for animals ranging from vaccines, preventative medicine, diagnosing and treating illnesses, dental procedures, and performing a wide array of surgeries. I help teach my clients about what is safe and healthy for their pet to ensure they live long and happy lives. What I cherish most about the veterinary profession is that I am given the opportunity to advocate for those without a voice and I hope to do so to the best of my ability for years to come.

How did your athletic involvement at RWU help you in the path that you chose following graduation? Being a student-athlete definitely taught me the value of time management and being able to think quickly on your feet. Both of those attributes were not only helpful for making it through vet school, but they still help me every day at work. The great thing about veterinary medicine, whether it be general practice or ER work, is that every day is different and you never know what is going to walk through those doors! Being able to stay calm and think quickly has definitely made me a better doctor.

What is your most fond memory of RWU Athletics?
I loved all the preseason workouts! That week where you and your teammates are basically the only ones on campus allowed us to not only focus on practicing tennis, but also allowed us to grow together as a team. The friendships we built during that short time only got stronger throughout the season and made us a better team.

What would you say were your greatest athletic and academic accomplishments during your time at RWU?
Working my way up to being All-Commonwealth Coast Conference First Team in singles and doubles was a big accomplishment athletically for me as I had not played tennis as long as many of my competitors. I set a goal for myself as freshman that I wanted to be the CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a James Russo Outstanding Student athlete, so achieving those off the court were great too. As for academic accomplishments, I would have to pick between receiving a President's Core Medallion at graduation and getting to present my senior honors thesis at the National Shellfisheries Association in California.

Why did you choose to attend RWU?
Being from a small town in Southeast Missouri, I was really looking for a college experience that was different from what I was used to and would allow me to branch out. From the moment I first saw RWU, I just knew it was the place I wanted to be. I instantly felt welcomed by everyone I met during my tour plus the views weren't too shabby either!

Were you involved in any extracurricular activities outside of athletics? If so, what?
I worked in the RWU Aquatic Diagnostic Laboratory and was a member of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society, Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematical Honor Society, a National Residence Hall Honorary Member, a Pre-Med/Pre-Vet member, and a part of the Scuba Club. I was also part of the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, where I was Historian in 2012, Vice President in 2013, and President in 2014.

What piece of advice would you have for current RWU student-athletes?
Enjoy every minute and give it your all! For a lot of us, college will be the last time we get to play our sport competitively so don't hold anything back. You are blessed to have this opportunity and all your hard work and dedication are going to make you a better player and a better human being for the future. The memories you make with your teammates, classmates, and friends are going to last you a lifetime so make the most of every second!
