Women's Tennis: Gkrekou Named CNE Rookie of the Week for Fifth Time

BRISTOL, R.I. — Roger Williams University first-year Iris Gkrekou (Athens, Greece) has been named the Conference of New England (CNE) Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday.

The selection marks Gkrekou's fifth CNE Rookie of the Week honor of the season. She was also named the conference's Player of the Week on Sept. 8.

Gkrekou finished the week with a combined 3-0 record between singles and doubles, helping Roger Williams record consecutive 7-0 victories over Hartford and Curry.

Against Hartford, Gkrekou teamed with Valentina Abarca (Riobamba, Ecuador) for a 6-1 victory over Lia Gosselin and Victalia Deida in the top doubles flight. She then clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Maddie Pearlman at No. 2 singles.

Gkrekou added another straight-set victory against Curry, defeating Cadence Roberts 6-1, 6-0 in the second singles flight.

Across her two singles matches, Gkrekou won all four sets while surrendering just one game. She allowed only two games across her three victories during the week.

Gkrekou improved to 12-1 in singles competition this season, including an 11-1 record at No. 2. She is also 9-2 in doubles play alongside Abarca, giving her a combined individual record of 21-3 during her first collegiate season.

The two victories improved Roger Williams to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in CNE competition.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they travel to West Hartford, Connecticut, to face the University of Saint Joseph at 3 p.m.
