How it Happened
The match started with a lot of early pressure from the Golden Bears. RWU Goalie
Morgan McCutcheon (Danbury, Conn.) had four saves for the Hawks before Western New England was able to break through in the 26
th minute. Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) took a shot from the left side of the field, around the corner of the six-yard box, and the ball ricocheted off McCutcheon's hand and fell into the right side of the goal, giving the WNE a 1-0 lead.
McCutcheon and the Hawks defense battled hard for the remainder of the half. They allowed nine total shots on goal in the frame, eight of which were saved by the Hawks senior goalie. Meanwhile on the offensive side, the Hawks would only see a total of four shots on goal in the half.
The second half held a different fate for the Hawks, as they were able to come out of the gate with more offensive aggression and they reaped the benefits, netting the equalizer in the 52
nd minute of play.
Junior Leah Lucius (Duxbury, Mass) had a breakaway chance and took a shot on the middle of the pitch that WNE's goalie, Molly McLaughlin (Guilford, Conn.) aggressively came out to make a play on. However, a loose ball opportunity ensued, and the Hawks'
Bianca Robbins (Johnston, R.I.) took advantage, coming up from the left side of the field and chipping the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to even the score.
The Golden Bears would hold the offensive possession for much of the next nine minutes of play; taking four shots on goal that were all successfully saved by McCutcheon. But the tide shifted again in the 62
nd minute of play when
Rachel Oster (Scituate, R.I.) dribbled the ball down the right side of the field past multiple WNE defenders. At the end of her dash, the freshman midfielder saw an opening and was able to chip the ball from the top right side of the six-yard box and into the lower left side of the goal to claim the lead, 2-1.
The last 30 minutes of play was a back-and-forth affair. The Hawks were unable to get another look at the net, while the Golden Bears took another three shots on goal but McCutcheon, as she was all day, was up to the task.
When the dust settled, Roger Williams was able to secure the victory 2-1, and advanced to the CCC Semifinals while also eliminating Western New England from the CCC Women's Soccer tournament.
Coach's Corner
We went into the game full of confidence but we only created a few chances in the first half and did not come out of the gates playing in high gear. We did not make it too difficult for them in the first half and as a result, we found ourselves a goal down. It was pretty even and we did put a few passes together, however we did not hurt them very much in the final third.
We had a good chat at halftime, changed our system slightly to see if that would help and it made a big difference. We scored using all three strikers and it fueled us to score the equalized. Then we changed things again, and that set us up for the second goal and game-winner.
From there, it was all about seeing the game out, picking our moments to counter attack and stay solid on the back line. We mixed it up again for the last fifteen minutes and defended resolutely to the final whistle. We were committed and brave during the last part of the match. Our goalkeeper made a fantastic stop and we defended like we wanted to win the match. We did all the things that winning teams do. We grew as a team a tremendous amount in that last twenty minutes. We had opportunities to finish off the game and get a third goal, but two was enough.
It was a great feeling to come from behind and win in this manner. We were down but not out, we did what we have been threatening to do for most of the season. We beat a team that had beat us, had more all-conference selections, but we turned up in the second half when the match was on the line.
We got our conference playoff win and that goes along way to showing others what this program is all about. It was a team effort and a team performance at the best time of the year. This is going to make an enjoyable weekend for all us associated with the women's soccer program at Roger Williams University.
