Opalka Claims Conference Player Of The Week & NEWBA Honors For First Time This Season

BRISTOL, R.I. – Karli Opalka (Southbury, Conn.) of the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team was named Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Week for the week of November 30th through December 5th and was selected to the New England Women's Basketball Association Honor Roll, as it was announced on Monday. Opalka has rounded into form of late with four consecutive double-doubles, three of them happening this week to guide the Hawks to a 3-0 week and program-best 6-0 start to the season.

Opalka is well accustomed to receiving CCC weekly recognition, as this marks the sixth time in her career that she has been awarded a weekly honor. She earned rookie of the week honors once as a freshman before piling up four player of the week selections her sophomore season. This is the first time she has been recognized thus far this season. In addition, this is the fourth time in her career she has been recognized by NEWBA, once in her freshman year as NEWBA Rookie of the Week and twice as a sophomore, once as player of the week and the other a selection to the NEWBA Honor Roll.

A force in the paint, Opalka led all players in rebounding in all three contests this week, while also leading all players in scoring in two of those contests. She began the week by setting her season-high with 16 points on 7-of 12 from the field in addition to securing 14 rebounds, with nine on the offensive end, in the Hawks 70-61 victory over Brandeis on Monday, but she was just getting started. She followed that up by leading all scorers with 15 points on 7-for-13 shooting while grabbing 16 boards, including six offensive, in RWU's 60-32 blowout victory over Wentworth in their conference opener on Wednesday. Then, on Saturday, she ended the week with her best performance yet, pouring in a season-best 22 points on 10-for-16 shooting, with 14 caroms, seven on the offensive glass, and a steal in the team's 79-47 win over Curry on Saturday.
