Sailing: Roger Williams Has top-10 finish at Schell Trophy, Land 12 at Victorian Urn

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University sailing team took part in five regattas over the past weekend, two of the Conference Championships, placing sixth at the Schell Trophy and 12th at the Victorian Urn Trophy.
 
The top conference championship finish was at the Schell Trophy hosted by Coast Guard. The Hawks compiled a total of 212 points to finish in sixth place, clearing seventh place Bowdoin by 30 points, and slotting eight points behind Coast Guard.
 
In Division A, Aidan Hoogland (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Molly Matthews (Grosse Ile, Mich.) combined for 84 points, picking up seven top-5 finishes, including two second place finishes in their ninth and 11th races. The Division B team, saw Oliver Stokke (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Claire Buckley (Bridgewater, Conn.) open the Division in races 1-4, but Cameron Wood (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Annika Irene (Excelsior, Minn.) combined for five top-5 finishes and a sixth-place finish as they raced the final 10 races.
 
At the Victorian Urn Trophy at Brown, the Hawks picked up 120 points in Division A from Claire Siegel-Wilson (Portland, Ore.) and Julia O'Connor (Foxboro, Mass.), who closed out strong finishing in fourth and sixth in their final two races. Division B saw the combination of Caylin Schnoor (San Diego, Calif.) and Maren Matthews (Harbor Springs, Mich.) grab 102 points, finishing in eighth in the division and placing inside the top-five in three individual races.
 
Outside of conference championship sailing, Roger Williams picked up a second-place finish at the Dave Perry Trophy. Posting a 9-3 record on the day, just behind first place Yale who compiled a 10-2 record. The Hawks top squad went 3-1, in each of their three rounds, including a defeat in the opening round against Yale, with the Hawks boats coming in at first second and third.
 
The Hawks competed at the Connecticut College Invite as well, with the top boat finishing in second overall. Division A saw Ian Hopkins Guerra (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands) and Katie McGagh (League City, Texas) finish with 43 total points to go with the 82 total points from Drew Mastovsky (Marion, Mass.) and Izaiah Farr (Dartmouth, Mass.).
 
Roger Williams will have another weekend of competition this weekend on Saturday, Nov. 5 when Mathieu Dale (Christiansted, Va.) competes at the College Sailing Singlehanded Nationals.
