HOUSTON – The Roger Williams women's rugby team is set to depart for Houston, Texas this week for a shot at a National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Division II National Title.
The Hawks who were ranked #5 nationally in the latest NCR poll, will take on #3 University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire in a national semifinal on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 5 pm ET/4 pm CST.
The Hawks enter the match with a dominant 6-0 record as they outscored opponents this season, 374-31, recording three shutouts on the season. The Hawks were undefeated conference champions of the Rugby Northeast Division II going 5-0 in the regular season.
In their South Regional Championship match against Coastal Carolina the Hawks again showed dominance with a 42-7 win. The Hawks also had 120 points in their victory over Bryant earlier this season.
Sarah Gray (Freeport, Maine) leads the Roger Williams attack with 72 points on the season, scoring 10 tries with 11 conversions. The Hawks' second leading scorer is
Bianca Caprio (Midland Park, N.J.), who has 70 points and ranks fourth in the conference, Gray sits at second.
Roger Williams also have four players on the roster who were selected for All-Conference honors, with Gray,
Sophia Bono (Chester Springs, Pa.),
Kaia Andersen (Rock City Falls, N.Y.), and
Casey Dunbar (West Nyack, N.Y.) each earning the honor.
Roger Williams is looking for their fourth national championship in program history, it would be their third title in 15s play, and first as a member of NCR Division II.
There will be an official sendoff party for the women's rugby team on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 1:20 pm at the Campus Rec Center as the Hawks depart campus for Houston.
The Hawks contest will be streamed courtesy of NCR, link will be available on rwuhawks.com and on the National Collegiate Rugby YouTube channel. The winner of Saturday's match will advance to Sunday's championship game with the team that falls participating in the Third-Place match.
