Predaris Sparks Offense In Support Of Nocella’s Gem In Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PAXTON, Mass. – Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) threw a one-hitter as the offense, lead by Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) and Maddie Predaris (Rye, N.H.) came to life for the Roger Williams University Softball team as they earned a doubleheader split against Anna Maria College on Tuesday afternoon. Taylor Howell (Sandwich, Mass.) blasted the team's first home run of the season in a game one defeat, 6-4 before the Hawks rebounded in the second contest behind Nocella's sparkling showing to secure a run-rule victory, 9-0.

With the split, RWU improves to 5-21 on the season. Meanwhile, the Amcats move to 11-17 on the spring.

In game one, Ellie Fleming (Marshfield, Mass.) got hit around a little bit, going 1.1 innings allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits and got tagged with the loss, falling to 1-7. Eden Forget (Worcester, Mass.) went the distance for the Amcats tossing seven innings allowing ten hits and a walk but only four runs, all earned while fanning two to get the win and move to 5-8.

The scripts were flipped in the second game as Nocella twirled five innings allowing just three baserunners on a hit and two walks, and she did not allow a run while striking out three. Her performance marked a continued strong stretch in the circle for the senior and saw her improve to 2-7. Sabrina Liston (Rehoboth, Mass.) got rocked on the other side, allowing nine runs, eight of the earned, on 11 hits and two walks despite striking out five as she fell to 6-9 on the year.

How It Happened
Roger Williams would jump on the scoreboard right away in this one. With one away, Isabelle Rosado (Central Islip, N.Y.) ripped her team-leading eighth double of the season and two batters later, Francesca Cioffi (Brewster, N.Y.) brought her in with a single to right and just like that, the Hawks had a 1-0 advantage before Ellie Fleming (Marshfield, Mass.) threw a single pitch.

Anna Maria had an answer in the home half of the inning. Michelle Cilley (Dracut, Mass.) and Samantha Dahill (Littleton, Mass.) opened the inning with a single and a double respectively to put two runners in scoring position with no one out. Flemming would limit the damage, allowing just a sacrifice fly by Saylor Costa (East Providence, R.I.) but the Amcats went right back to work in the second.

Ashley Garcia (Cornwall, N.Y.) leadoff with a single into left center followed by a pair of bunts, one for a hit by Kiara Edmonds (Lynn, Mass.), and one for a sacrifice by Samantha Rintoul-Bonneau (Worcester, Mass.) put a pair of runners in scoring position with just one out. Flemming then induced a groundball by Kassandra Register (Bakersfield, Calif.) and the RWU defense came home with it, but Garcia was safe at the plate and during the course of the play, Register advanced to second. Cilley brought in both runs with a single prompting a change in the circle as Taylor Myers (East Haven, Conn.) entered and she got out of the jam, but the score was 4-1 AMC.

The hosts tacked on two more in the fourth inning. Rintoul-Bonneau singled to open the frame then after the first two outs were recorded, Dahill smacked a home run to left field to extend the advantage to five runs.

The Hawks would fight back however, beginning in the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Taylor Howell (Sandwich Mass.) stepped in and slammed the team's first homerun of the season over the fence in center field to get one back. The following inning, they got another one as Alex Burdick (Jewett City, Conn.) and Alexandra Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) hit back-to-back two-baggers to open the frame to score another run and all of a sudden, this one was interesting.

Things got all the more intriguing in the seventh when Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) opened with a double, Rosado got hit by a pitch, and Howell doubled in a run to put the tying run on second and go-ahead run at the plate with still no outs in the inning. Cioffi would step in and barreled one but unfortunately it found the glove of the centerfielder Register and Howell got doubled off second on the play. The final out would ensue and RWU dropped game one, 6-4.

How It Happened
The second game of the doubleheader would be all Roger Williams. After an uneventful first inning, the Hawks offense got going in the second. Bay Naples (Livingston, N.J.) and Maddie Predaris (Rye, N.H.) singled putting two on with two out. Emma MacLean (Newton, Mass.) proceeded to come through, slapping a double to right-center to score both the runs and Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) would bring her home on a single and RWU had the lead.

The visitors added another in the fourth as Predaris leadoff with an infield single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Provencal single, but they really broke the game open in the fifth.

With one out, Alex Burdick (Jewett City, Conn.) and Naples doubled to put two in scoring position. Casey Uryga (Berlin, Conn.) entered to run for Naples as Madison Tobin (Pittsfield, Mass.) pinch hit and she came through, floating a single over the pitcher's head and into no-man's land in the center of the infield to score a run. Tobin swiped second before Predaris ripped one into the gap in left-center to score a pair. The second out was recorded and then the Hawks caught a break as Maclean reached on an error. She stole second and Provencal came through with her third run-scoring hit of the day, plating two runs this time with a single to center and the Roger Williams advantage was 9-0.

All the while, Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) was dealing in the circle. She only allowed a trio of baserunners in the contest, two with walks and one with a hit, and of those runners only one made it into scoring position as Kiara Edmonds (Lynn, Mass.) walked and was sacrificed to second in the third inning with two outs but she advanced no further as RWU dominated on their way to a game two win, 9-0.

What's Next
Roger Williams gets to rest for a few days before they kick off a busy Easter weekend in Bristol on Friday afternoon as they host Nichols College for a twin bill on Friday. Game one is set to start at 2:00 PM.
