BIDDEFORD, Maine – Five singles players and two doubles pairings were named to the All-Commonwealth Coast Conference Teams for the Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team, as it was announced by the conference offices on Friday.
Dan Tocco (East Quogue, N.Y.) and
Jon Trevethan (Berlin, Conn.) swept first team honors for both singles and doubles while
Barry Gorman secured his fourth CCC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.
Three other singles players joined Tocco and Trevethan with All-CCC status. On the second team was
Ryan Schuck (Glastonbury, Conn.) while
Johnny Baldyga (Simsbury, Conn.) and
Matt Glassman (West Hartford, Conn.) were each selected to the third team. In addition, the pairing of Glassman and
Tyler Cain (Montpelier, Vt.) earned All-CCC Third Team recognition in doubles.
The recognition is well earned as RWU finished the regular season at 14-2 overall and 7-1 in league play to secure the second seed entering the conference playoffs on Saturday. The Hawks also lead all teams in All-CCC- Singles selections with five to rank ahead of Nichols College and Endicott College who claimed four each. Meanwhile, the seven combined All-CCC selections between singles and doubles is tied for the most in the conference.
It is the second consecutive year that Tocco and Trevethan earned All-CCC First Team honors in both singles and doubles, and the third time overall that Tocco has earned all-conference in singles. Meanwhile, for Schuck and Cain, it is the second time each of them has earned all-conference though interestingly enough each of them earned it in a different fashion than they had previously. Cain was an All-CCC Second Team honoree in singles last year before earning it in doubles this spring while the script was flipped for Schuck, after he received All-CCC First Team recognition in doubles last season. In addition, Glassman is the first freshman in program history to make the all-conference team in both singles and doubles.
The reigning CCC Player of the Year, Trevethan fell just short of repeating that feat but was still dominant this season playing at the topflight in both singles and doubles for Roger Williams. In singles play, he finished 12-4 including 7-1 in conference matchups, and along the way he picked up a win over Ezekiel Hall, the player from Gordon who wound up being named CCC Player of the Year. Tocco joined his doubles running mate on the first team for singles with yet another masterful season playing at #2 singles for RWU. He finished a team-best 15-1, 7-1 in conference action leading the Hawks in singles wins and total wins. Together, the duo was nearly unstoppable as they went 15-1 and were undefeated in eight matches of conference action, beating each of the other two All-CCC First Team- Doubles pairs along the way.
Schuck was an invaluable depth piece for Roger Williams this season, and he quietly finished second on the roster in singles wins with 14 playing primarily at the #4 singles position. There, he finished 14-1 and 7-1 against conference competition.
Rounding out the singles selections for RWU are the freshman starters, Baldyga and Glassman. After not appearing in a match until the team's spring break trip, Baldyga virtually came out of nowhere to be the only Hawk to go undefeated in singles play across his 11 matches this season. He appeared at the #5 singles spot in each of the team's conference contests, going 7-0. Glassman, on the other hand, secured the third flight in singles for RWU in the fall and he held firm all the way through going 10-6, 6-2 in CCC action.
Glassman also made the All-CCC Third Team-Doubles alongside Cain as they appeared in ten matches together this season at the third flight, going 9-1 on the year, 6-1 against CCC competition.
For Gorman, it is the second-straight year that he has earned the CCC Coach of the Year award for men's tennis. If you include the accolades for his work with the women's team, he has now received CCC Coach of the Year recognition in the past four seasons that he has coached as he is also won the award three-straight years in women's tennis. Overall, Gorman has gotten Coach of the Year four times with the men's team and eight times overall.
