Men's Tennis: Hawks Set to Take on #7 Bowdoin in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

BRUNSWICK, Maine – After earning the program's first NCAA Tournament victory since 2021 with a 4-1 win over Farmingdale State on Friday afternoon, the Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team advances to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship for a showdown with nationally ranked Bowdoin College on Saturday morning in Brunswick. The Hawks improved to 19-5 overall with the win, extending their winning streak to four matches entering Saturday's contest.

Roger Williams enters the second round led by Conference of New England Coach of the Year Barry Gorman, who added another milestone victory to his tenure with Friday's NCAA Tournament triumph. Gorman now owns a 143-46 career record at Roger Williams and continues to guide one of the most successful eras in program history, earning his first NCAA Tournament Win in the process.

The Hawks have relied on exceptional depth throughout the spring, posting a 90-34 singles record and a 47-17 doubles mark entering NCAA Tournament play. Senior Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.) has led Roger Williams with a 16-2 singles record and entered the postseason on a 10-match winning streak. Junior Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) has added a 15-2 singles campaign, while senior Camden Poitras (Londonderry, N.H.) owns a 14-5 mark. Freshman Om Seth (Lincoln, R.I.) has emerged as one of the Hawks' breakout performers with a 14-3 singles record in his rookie season.

Roger Williams has also excelled in doubles competition behind the All-Conference First Team tandem of Ryan Carroll and Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.), who have combined for a 16-5 doubles record this season. Senior Camden Poitras and Will Hurlbut earned All-Conference Third Team recognition after totaling nine doubles victories together this spring.

Awaiting the Hawks is one of the nation's premier Division III programs in Bowdoin College. The Polar Bears enter Saturday's matchup with a 17-4 overall record after advancing to the NESCAC Championship match and earning an NCAA Tournament hosting bid. Bowdoin has consistently competed among the top teams in the country under head coach Conor Smith, who has led the Polar Bears since 2011.

During Smith's tenure, Bowdoin has captured three NESCAC Championships in 2017, 2018, and 2024 while winning the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championship and finishing as national runner-up in 2018. Smith has also guided Bowdoin to NESCAC Tournament finals appearances in 2012, 2016, 2023, and 2025, while coaching multiple NCAA individual and doubles champions. Smith was named the 2016 ITA National Coach of the Year and is a five-time NESCAC Coach of the Year recipient. Prior to Bowdoin, Smith served as head coach at Bridgewater College from 2008-11 following assistant coaching stints at Washington College and the University of Mary Washington.

The Polar Bears boast one of the deepest lineups in Division III tennis, compiling a 91-29 singles record and a 40-22 doubles mark entering NCAA Tournament competition. Bowdoin owns victories this season over nationally ranked programs including Johns Hopkins, Williams, and Middlebury while advancing to the NESCAC Tournament championship match before falling to fourth-ranked Tufts.

Individually, Bowdoin has been powered by a balanced lineup throughout the season. Senior Andrew Mendelson carries a team-best 15-4 singles record, while sophomore Kiran Garapati and senior Mark Kneiss each own 14-5 marks. Freshman Simon Catanzaro has added a 13-4 singles campaign, and junior Jackson Codd enters Saturday with a 12-3 record. In doubles competition, the pairing of Garapati and Catanzaro has produced a team-best 14-5 record.

Bowdoin's roster features talent from across the United States and internationally, including student-athletes from California, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Washington, D.C., Greece, and Sweden.

Saturday's matchup will pit one of the nation's most established programs against a surging Roger Williams squad seeking another postseason breakthrough as the Hawks attempt to advance to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
