BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team picked up their first NCAA Tournament victory under Head Coach
Barry Gorman on Friday afternoon, defeating Farmingdale State, 4-1, on the Pickard Tennis Courts, hosted by Bowdoin.
This moves the Hawks' all-time NCAA Tournament record to 3-3, and is the first time Gorman has coached an NCAA Tournament team to a victory in his tenure. Gorman's win comes in his second appearance.
In singles play, the Hawks took control with the team of
Iker Rodriguez Alcocer (Nuacalpan de Juarez, Mexico) and
Tucker Taylor (Gonzales, Texas) taking No. 3 doubles by a score of 6-1 over the Rams' Emil Sabovic and Luke Plana. No. 2 Doubles saw the Hawks seal the point, with
Camden Poitras (Londonderry, N.H.) and
Will Hurlbut (Marion, Mass.) earning a 6-1 win over Kwaku Ageyeman and Henri Pothier taking a 6-1 win. The No.1 singles match involving Farmingdale State's Zakaria Ahmed and Devan Melandro was halted with
Bronson DeSisto (Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Ryan Carroll (Holden, Mass.) led the match 5-1 by the time it was suspended.
In singles play, the Hawks saw Poitras pick up the first point in singles play, who picked up the 6-1, 6-2 win over Michael Lerman. A few minutes later, Hurlbut tallied a win at the No. 6 singles spot, defeating Danial Zindani, 6-4, 6-2, taking a 3-0 lead in the match.
The Rams picked up their first point of the match at the No. 5 singles spot as Porthier earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, before Carroll secured the victory with a No. 2 singles victory over Ahmend, 6-3, 6-1.
Roger Williams (19-5, 10-1 CNE) will take on #7 Bowdoin on Saturday, May 9 at 10:00 pm on the Pickard Tennis Courts in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
