NEW ORLEANS, LA. – After one day on the water by the bayou, the Roger Williams University Sailing team stands as the runner-up at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Team Racing National Championships, hosted by Tulane University. The Hawks rank second out of the 16-team field, trailing only Georgetown in the standings.
The format sees the RWU go head-to-head against each of the other 15 teams in attendance, with three boats on the water for each team, and the Hawks have rolled to this point. The pairings of
Spencer Cartwright (Nassau, Bahamas) and
Rachel Holick (Lawrence, N.J.),
Cameron Wood (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and
Emily Gildea (Palos Park, Ill.), and
Aidan Hoogland (Chula Vista, Calif.) and
Molly Matthews (Grosse Ile, Mich.) have sailed really well, finishing 1-2-3 in four of five races so far.
They opened up the championship by taking the top three spots against Navy before doing the same against Penn and Charleston. Their depth was the winning factor against Yale as the Bulldogs took the top spot, but Roger Williams took the next three to grab the win. The Hawks wrapped up the day by sweeping the top-three over Boston College.
Roger Williams will open their second day of action by racing the University of Wisconsin on Tuesday.
