Sailing Ends Regional Competition, Takes Third At New England Dinghy Championships

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team concluded their regional competition on a high note securing a third place finish out of 18 teams at the New England Dinghy Championships, hosted by MIT, over the weekend. It was one of two regattas the Hawks competed in, and they did well thanks to a well-balanced performance finishing fourth in Division B and sixth in Division A.

Hawk Highlights
At the New England Dinghy Championships for the CG Alumni Bowl, hosted by MIT, Roger Williams took third despite not claiming a top-three spot in either division and it is a testament to their depth. At Division A, the Hawks deployed the boat of Spencer Cartwright (Nassau, Bahamas) and Emily Gildea (Palos Park, Ill.) all weekend as they took sixth picking up four top-three finishes along the way. In Division B it was almost exclusively the pairing of Aidan Hoogland (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Molly Matthews (Grosse Ile, Mich.) though Hank Bailey (Chatham, Mass.) also rotated in for a race. They rebounded after taking 15th in the opening race to climb to fourth on the back of five top-two finishes.

RWU also competed at the Southern 7 Fleet Race where they had trouble finding consistency at both divisions to fall to sixth. In Division A, Luke Hosek (Chicago, Ill.) and Izaiah Farr (Dartmouth, Mass.) had trouble out of the gates finishing 14th, 12th, 13th, and 13th across their first four races but they were terrific in the second half of competition to at least salvage their score. Meanwhile, the script was flipped for Emmet Nevel (Chicago, Ill.) and Ethan Snyder (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) in Division B as they started very strong but really struggled in the second half of competition for the Hawks.
