Sailing Continues Strong Week, Takes Third At ICSA Open Semifinals

NEW ORLEANS, LA. – The Roger Williams University Sailing team took third place at the ICSA College Sailing Open Western Semifinal, hosted by Tulane University this week. The Hawks dominated in B Division posting the second-lowest score of any boat on the water at the event to lift the team into their final placing.

Hawk Highlights
Roger Williams would use a lot of different people across the two days of sailing on the bayou during this regatta. They primarily utilized their normal pairings of Spencer Cartwright (Nassau, Bahamas) and Molly Matthews (Grosse Ile, Mich.) in A Division and Cameron Wood (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and Emily Gildea (Palos Park, Ill.) in B Division, but they also rotated through Aidan Hoogland (Chula Vista, Calif.), Annika Irene (Excelsior, Minn.), and Hank Bailey (Chatham, Mass.) in the top boat and Mathieu Dale (Christiansted, USVI) and Irene in the second division. Irene finished with the most races of all the Hawks on the water, appearing in ten races across the two divisions.

RWU took a solid sixth-place finish in A Division though they struggled with consistency. They had a trio of finishes within the top-three in the 18-boat field, but they also had a trio of double-digit placings to inflate their final score in the division. It was a different story in B Division though, as they were a paradigm of steadiness. They only finished in the top-three on a trio of occasions, but when paired with a quartet of fourth-place finishes, one more in fifth and only one race with a double-digit finish, and they finished with a terrific score of 58 that was good for the second-best of any boat on the water in the event.
