NEW ORLEANS, LA. – The Roger Williams University Women's Rugby team claimed Women's D1 Club National Championship at the Collegiate Rugby Championship May Madness 7's at Airline Stadium. The Hawks soared to the top by going 5-1 overall on the weekend to claim the title.
After punching their tickets to the May Madness Tournament by winning the Beast of the East Tournament in April, RWU The tournament opened with pool play on Saturday, May 28
th. There, the Hawks went 2-1 picking up shutout victories over Coastal Carolina University and the University of Wisconsin- Madison by scores of 29-0 and 27-0 respectively. Sandwiched in between was a 15-10 loss to Grand Valley State University.
The 2-1 record out of pool play drew them Kutztown University in the Quarterfinals and that match would be a battle but one that RWU would win by a score of 7-5 over the Bears. In the semifinals, Roger Williams would hold off the University of Texas, 17-10 as they advanced to the Women's D1 Club National Championship Final match.
In the title contest, the Hawks would finish the job against the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire. RWU would proceed to defeat the Blugolds by a score of 12-7 to bring the trophy back to Bristol.
