NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team will take the mat on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, Mar. 1 at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championships at the United States Coast Guard Academy.
The Hawks will send 10 wrestlers who will battle over the course of the next two days for a spot at the NCAA Division III National Championships, which will take place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The top three at each respective weight class will earn a spot in Iowa.
At 125 pounds, Spencer Buscema (Salem, N.H.) will represent the Hawks after posting a 10-9 record on the year. At 133 pounds, Caden Bruseo (Brookline, N.H.) has battled his way to a 17-11 record in the 2025-26 season, opening his season at 7-3, before posting a 10-8 record over the last half of the year, finishing with two straight wins over Robert Stone of Rhode Island College (RIC) and Ryan O'Rourke of Johnson & Wales (JWU).
The Hawks will see captain Shaun McLaughlin (Natick, Mass.) represent the Hawks at 141 pounds, competing in a competitive field in New England to a 15-14 record on the season. McLaughlin opened the season at 7-10 before leveling his record and going 5-4 over his final nine matches on the year.
Fellow captain, Matt Castillo (Port Washington, N.Y.), sits at 9-1 on the season, competing in a limited schedule, but has been riding a seven-match winning streak to close the season, being seeded fourth for the tournament. At 157, is Jack Forte (Westbury, N.Y.), who has a 19-4 record, has earned a key victory against Matt Rodriguez, and enters as the fifth seed.
Matt Gish (Cromwell, Conn.) sits eighth at 165 pounds, in the latest NEWA Individual Rankings after breaking out in his first-year campaign to a 23-10 record, while Gordon Murray (Porter, Corners, N.Y.) battled to an 18-11 record at 174 pounds.
The Roger Williams University wrestler at 184 pounds is Joshua Nieroda (West Suffield, Conn.), who has gone 19-10 on the year, ranking seventh in the NEWA rankings. At 197 pounds is Eric Power (Roslindale, Mass.) who has gone 10-9 on the year, picking up wins over Imanol Taveras in Rhode Island College and Charlie Maloy of Western New England, who ranks eighth in NEWA at the weight.
Rounding out the group is Jayden Toppan (Gloucester, Mass.). The Hawks' heavyweight is ranked seventh in NEWA and has posted a 19-9 record, while posting three wins in his final three matches by fall.
