BRISTOL, R.I.- RWU freshman wrestler Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) was named Pilgrim League Rookie of the Week after placing third in the 184 weight class Saturday at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.
Wrestling in his first-ever collegiate tournament, Ernst dropped his first match before reeling off six-straight victories to secure third place. Along the way he defeated opponents from Bridgewater State University, Rhode Island College, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Springfield College and Brockport.
Ernst's strong performance helped the RWU Hawks to an eighth-place finish in the 18-team tournament. He and the team are back in action Saturday, Dec. 5th, when they travel to Johnson & Wales University for a powerful Pilgrim League contest. RWU enters ranked 29th nationally while the hosts rank 25th. The match begins at 7 p.m.
