Men's Track and Field win TCCC Invitational Championship

BRISTOL, R.I.- In its first season as a varsity sport, the Roger Williams University Men's Track and Field team won The Commonwealth Coast Conference Invitational Championship, while the women earned a solid third-place finish, Saturday at Gordon College.

 

Throughout the men's competition, the team scores were tight with RWU and Colby-Sawyer College vying for the lead. With the Chargers in the lead and just two events remaining, RWU responded scoring 34 points to take the title. The Hawks finished with 239 points followed by Colby-Sawyer's 205. Gordon took third place with 118.

 

Freshman Jamie Goodwick (Newtown, Conn.) led RWU, scoring 34 individual points, competing in six events despite an injury to his leg. Senior Kevin Clark (Feeding Hills, Mass.) also performed well winning both the 1500 and 5000 events. Including his cross country success, Clark has garnered seven individual TCCC titles.

 

In the women's competition, freshman Kristen Metcalf (Londonderry, N.H.) recorded a team-high 34 points and qualified for the New England Championships in the 200 meter. Her time of 26.98 set a new RWU record, as she bettered second place by .74 seconds. Freshman Meghan Krauss (Holliston, Mass.) also set a new RWU record, posting a time of 13.14 to win the 100 meter event and qualify for New England's – just .01 ahead of Metcalf. Freshman Liz Futoma (Portsmouth, R.I.) also set an RWU record, placing third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.31.


The Hawks took first place in the 4x100 meter relay, setting a new school record with a time of 52.50. Metcalf, Krauss, freshman Maria Lobalbo (Bethel, Conn.) and freshman Lauren Sposato (South Salem, N.Y.) combined for the win.

 

Gordon College won the event with an impressive 245 points. Salve Regina earned second at 133, while the Hawks totaled 91 points on the day.

 

The New England Division III Championships begin Friday, May 1st at 10 a.m. on the campus of Springfield College, in Springfield, Mass. Saturday's events also begin at 10 a.m.
