Hawks volleyball advances into TCCC Semifinals

BRISTOL, R.I. – The top-seeded RWU Women's Volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over visiting Regis College Tuesday in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals. The Hawks won by the scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-13 to advance into the TCCC Semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m. against the fourth seed, University of New England.

RWU led a balanced attack offensively with four players recording at least eight kills on the night. Freshman Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) led all players with nine kills on 18 swings. Classmate and fellow middle hitter Holly Hancock (Tilton, N.H.) notched eight kills on 18 swings, while sophomore Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) posted the same numbers. Junior Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) notched eight kills on 19 swings.

Defensively for Regis, freshman libero Sara Gold (N. Hollywood, Calif.) performed well digging out nine attacks, while passing an impressive .967 serve-receive percentage with just one reception error on 29 attempts. Three other Pride members registered six digs, including freshman Julie Endara (Boca Raton, Fla.) who tied senior Meghan McCarty (Billerica, Mass.) with a team-high three kills.

RWU senior Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) led all players with 18 digs in three sets along with three service aces and zero errors on 16 attempts. Classmate Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) also notched three service aces for RWU along with two errors each.

The loss completes the season for Regis as the Pride finish at 9-24 overall, while RWU improves to 27-5. UNE advanced to play RWU in the semifinals with a 3-2 win over Western New England College earlier tonight. RWU is 2-0 against the Nor'easters already this season, defeating them 3-0, Sept. 11, and 3-1, Oct. 27.
