BRISTOL, RI — For the third consecutive week and the fourth time this season, Roger Williams University wrestling freshman Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) was named Pilgrim League Rookie of the Week.
Wrestling at 184, Ernst posted a perfect 2-0 record last week, improving to 25-11 on the season. In his first match Sunday in Gorham, Maine, Ernst met Rhode Island College senior Ray Moore who currently ranks third in New England. Ernst won the hard-fought battle, 5-4, giving the Hawks three points for the decision.
Ernst's second bout also ended in a one-point victory for the freshman, as he defeated the University of Southern Maine's Nick Laurino, 2-1. The win started a nine-point streak for the Hawks, bringing them back from a 17-10 deficit to win the match 19-17.
Ernst currently ranks second in New England at 184 behind Johnson & Wales junior Brenna Ward, who is the eighth-ranked wrestler in the nation.
The RWU Wrestling Team returns to action Wednesday in the team's final regular season home contest, hosting Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 6 p.m. in the RWU Campus Recreation Center.
