Softball shut out in season openers

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team could not begin the 2011 season with a win, as the Hawks were defeated by Farmingdale State College 0-6 in the team's first game of the year, followed by a 0-10 loss to Catholic University.

Farmingdale opened up the top of the first with two runs in the inning before tacking on one more in the third. The Rams maintained a 3-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth when they doubled their advantage, adding three more in the frame.

Jaclyn Doolin (Miller Place, N.Y.) took the loss in the season opener, giving up six runs (five earned) in five innings of work. Doolin also went 2-for-3 at the plate in the contest. Stacy Broughton (Newtown, Conn.) tossed an inning of scoreless relief, giving up only one hit. Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) and Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) each added a hit for the Hawks.

Against Catholic University, the Hawks' offense was held in check as the team only mustered one hit over the course of the game. Catholic scored two runs in the top of the third to take the lead, then rallied for five runs in the fifth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The Cardinals would tack on three more in the seventh to go up by double digits.

Broughton suffered the loss for RWU, allowing three runs in two innings, followed by Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) surrendering seven runs (four earned) in five innings of relief. Erica Castro (Medford, N.Y.) had the lone hit on the day for RWU.

Roger Williams (0-2) next faces Illinois Wesleyan University and Montclair State University.
