WENHAM, Mass. - In a The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Softball double-header with the visiting Hawks of Roger Williams University today, the Fighting Scots dropped game one 10-1 and were edged 12-10 in game two to move to 12-19 overall, 7-13 in conference on the season.
Despite drawing first blood in the bottom of the first when Emily Borden (Groton, Conn.) belted an RBI-double to bring home Rachel Otto (Plymouth, N.H.), that would prove to be all the Scots could muster offensively in game one, as the Hawks surged to bring in runs in each subsequent inning en route to the dominant 10-1.
Kelly Marcin (Windsor Locks, Conn.) won the game for Roger Williams, pitching six innings and giving up one run on four hits. Hannah Pirez (Bolton, Mass.) finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Natasha Stone (Harrison, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.
Game two looked to be following a similar trend after the guest Hawks crossed home seven times in the top of the opening inning to leave the Scots to battle a heavy deficit. Battle they did, however, with two runs in the bottom of the third and a huge eight-run fifth which saw RBIs from Rachel Morrisey (Mashpee, Mass.), Amber Harris (Concord, N.H.), Becka May (Plainville, Conn.), Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.), Liz Cheesman (Winslow, Maine), Otto and Borden en route to overtaking the lead, 10-8.
The Hawks answered right back with two runs of their own in the top of the next inning to fend off defeat and force extra innings. And in the end, it was Roger Williams who would get the final say, bringing in a pair in the top of the eighth to leave Gordon on the losing end of the 12-10 result.
Kara Lewis (Bristol, R.I.) got her first win of the year, pitching the final four innings and allowing three runs on two hits and two walks. Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Pirez was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Despite the losses, Borden had an outstanding performance on the day with five hits and four RBIs in six at bats for Gordon.
The women return to action tomorrow as they play host to TCCC opponent Curry College at 3:00PM. Roger Williams (14-20, 12-7 TCCC) travels to New England College Friday afternoon.
